Re: Top rock songs ever

any song better than Bohemian Rhapsody??

I think "comfortably numb" isn't even one of Pink Floyd's
best songs... I'd take Money, Time, Have a Cigar, Welcome
to the Machine.... etc... over that one.

xx44's list sounds pretty good...

Just remove Bruce Springsteen
altogether and add YES-Roundabout and Your Move/All good people.

Some other songs deserving of mention:

Elton John -- Funeral for a Friend
Boston -- Foreplay/Long time
Peter Framption -- Do you feel like we do?
( one of the best ( longest, most entertaining ) live guitar soloes )

Robin Trower -- Day of the Eagle
Ted Nugent -- Stranglehold

Pearl Jam -- Alive
Smashing Pumpkins -- Jellybelly
White Zombie -- More Human than Human ( meet bambi in the king's
harem mix )

But I think a case could be made for "We are the Champions"
by Queen for best rock song ever.

That song stands out among rock songs like
Shakespeare stands out among playwrights.

is it cuz it's overplayed? Or you just never liked it?

I just never liked Stairway to Heaven. I can sort of understand why it's so highly regarded, but I've never cared for it.

The only thing I don't like is that his solo is regarded as his "best". And casual Zep fans therefore seem to undervalue Page because they think that's his best solo, which, IMO, it probably isn't in his top 3.

The song itself is awesome, though.

your top 3 page solos please?

Yeah, this is how I am. I mean, I don't hate it, I wouldn't change the radio station if it comes on, but I would never voluntarily put it on to listen to. But I just am not that into LZ for whatever reason. And to answer the question asked to the other guy, I do like Bohemian Rhapsody quite a bit.

that one list at least got one thing right for sure, and that is that Hendrix's best song is All Along The Watchtower. I get on lifetilt whenever people think it's something other than that

Two that I'd say are definitely better are:
Since I've Been Loving You
Fool in the Rain (it's quiet, but it's great work)

His Black Dog outro is probably better, too.

Other notables that are "on par" with Stairway solos:
Whole Lotta Love, Good Times Bad Times, and his 2nd solo in Heartbreaker (not the ridic. fast one, but the "slower one")

phb,

I don't know how many of his other solos are off-the-cuff, but I've always been really impressed by the (reported) fact that the Stairway solo was improv and needed three takes or less, without being written beforehand.

Re: Top rock songs ever

I own Guitar World magazine of the "Greatest 50 guitar solos of Rock" or whatever from a few years back. STH was #1 on the list and there is a small tidbit quoting Page when he says that he did 3 different solos and picked the one he thought was best, but he said it was clear which was best. He did state taht he had in his head how the general structure was to be but the actual notes were improv.

This doesn't surprise me too much, really. His (as well as many others') solo work is such quality taht I think he can just pump out whatever he's feeling at the moment and it can stand up.

I remember Slash once said that when he's soloing, he's hearing the solo in his head a split-second before he plays it, and his fingers just play what he's concocting in his head. SICK!!!
