It won't matter if we keep playing like we did today. But I just thought I'd play the role of theoretician for the moment.

Before today, 5 teams were realistically in the running for the Rose Bowl. Cal, USC, Oregon, ASU, and UCLA. So here's what needs to happen.

Required: Cal wins out.

Supplementary required: Cal's two losses, who hold tie breakers against Cal, lose 3+ games

OSU: (already lost 2) loses to just about anyone. Let's say Oregon.
UCLA: loses to ASU, USC, and Oregon. Also quite possible, though obviously we need a Dorrelian meltdown here. I wouldn't put it past them to lose a random game against a bottom-of-the-Pac team too (not just b/c they're UCLA - also because it seems any Pac-10 team can knock off any other team on a given Saturday) but those 3 are obviously the most likely.

Other fun stuff: The 1-loss team Cal has already beat needs to lose one more.
- that's Oregon, folks, and frankly, this is the one that seems least likely to happen. But hey, they're only up by a TD against UW as I write this, so let's say they lose to the Dawgs or the Trojans.
Even more fun stuff: the one undefeated (in Pac-10 play) team Cal has yet to face must lose 1 more (only 1 because we're assuming we'll beat them, giving us the tiebreaker against them).
- that's ASU, folks, and I think we can all see that happening. Most likely loss: USC. But it could be Oregon too. Remember, we have the Devils beating UCLA above.

And that's it, actually. In summary:
UCLA: loses 3 games (ASU, USC, Oregon - 3 games in which they'll likely be underdogs), which is 1 more than Cal.
ASU: loses 2 games (Cal, USC/Ore), which is the same as Cal but we'll own the tiebreaker against them.
Oregon: loses two games (Cal, USC and/or UW, OSU, etc), which is the same as Cal but we'll own the tiebreaker against them.
USC: loses two games (Stanford, Cal), which is the same as Cal but we'll own the tiebreaker against them.
For completeness' sake, OSU: loses 3+ games (ASU, UCLA, USC/other), which is 1 more than us.

So there you go. Hope is still alive. The Bear will not quit, etc. Although the Bear will allow massive rushing gains and will be unable to defend a pass without interfering, so take the math for what you will.

LOL...one of my buddies texted me, "Holiday Bowl"? I told him if everything works out, Cal will be playing at the "This Product Contains Nuts And Both Teams Are On The Same Side Of The Field Bowl".

It seems like they will always be able to score points, but the defense gets exposed just about every year. Maybe they can get Mike Nolan to be their Def Coord and solve two problems at the same time. [img]/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]
