I call them "hun."

But then again, I'm a bastard.

I use [censored] like this all the time, also with men - 'my lad' is a favorite of mine w/ dudes remotely young enough for me to get away with it.

My 49 year-old father calls 16 year-old waitresses "ma'am." It weirds me out every time. I always say, "Dude, dad, you can't call them ma'am. That's weird." And then he just looks away and ignores me.

I just find it really really weird to call someone 30 years your junior "ma'am." Unless you're like an 80 year old guy hitting on a 50 year old chick trying to sound super respectful.

I call waitresses ma'am as well, but I'm somewhere around the same age or younger.

I call most women in service jobs darlin' or sweetheart. Why would you feel awkward about this?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because it's condescending.

[/ QUOTE ]
They don't ever give any indication that they feel this way, but that could be because they want a tip. I live in Ohio, maybe it would be considered condescending where you live.

[/ QUOTE ]

quite often they will behind your back, certainly the case here in the UK

[/ QUOTE ]

definitely not the case in the midwestern united states.

esp considering most of the waitresses call the male customers "honey" or "darlin"

I love it when waitresses call me stuff like that.
