Clearly many people who understand EV have replied that they do in fact enjoy table games. Shouldn't this discussion be over? It's not that hard to understand that there's things in life that have value besides money. The thrill of playing a $5k hand is probably worth more than the 10 bucks in EV it costs you.

i think that would depend on the idea of rationality. Do emotions keep you living and functioning? yes -- so they are somewhat rational. Are they preprogramed, or even programable to calculate long division? no, thats a different part of the brain.

i dont' know if you're being sarcastic, or not reading my irony, but tilt, by definition, is an emotional state of mind.

Are emotions, by definition, irrational?

[/ QUOTE ]

Not necessarily. Some people might use emotions functionally to their benefit. I guess you could call this "functional irrationality" or something.

I think Sklansky talks about using your emotions in one of his essays since you can't truly "escape your own emotions."

I think this is right, which was my earlier point.

If you're playing with money that doesn't mean anything to you while getting some sort of comp (like free drinks in vegas) , with friends , then yes it can be fun.

If you really understand this concept, can table games still be fun?

Does anyone here genuinely enjoy table games for stakes comparable to your poker games?

[/ QUOTE ]

To answer your first question-YES

Second question- "for stakes comparable to your poker games", I think this answer might seperate the gamblers from the strategy players to some extent. I really have never been much of a gambler, by that I mean I don't bet on sports, buy lottery tickets, or make any wagers totaling over 1% of my 2 week pay check.
Yet I have no problem losing hundreds of dollars a day playing poker because I know I'll get it back and then some by playing solid. I believe the difference is that I know and undertand EV and have worked my way and BR up to this point by solid play and letting the %'s work out.
I'd be really bummed if I lost $50 on a football bet, though. To me I'm just throwing money away to make a football game more exciting, and over the long or short run, it's not worth it to me....but that's just me, I'm not a gambler. I have good friends who love to sports bet, and I know they derive enough enjoyment that it's worthwhile to them, despite an almost guarenteed long term loss rate.

I'm guessing pretty much everyone here has a basic understanding of EV, and knows that nearly all casino table games are designed to be strictly -EV to the player.

If you really understand this concept, can table games still be fun? I know some people like to play roulette or slots to blow off steam, but I don't understand how people can actually enjoy playing a game when they know it's -EV (especially coinflip-type bets). Does anyone here genuinely enjoy table games for stakes comparable to your poker games?
