That is true but it doesn't account for quality of the student.

Actually, the what makes the paper so good is that they do account for the quality of the student (at least better than most previous research).

Who I knew had zero to do with my first (current) job out of college, as well as most other people graduating with me. But it's what works for some people. I imagine who you know isn't as important in finding a job in engineering as in other fields.

I pretty much agree with this post, and with regards to sciences I think it matters even less at an undergraduate level. one of my best friends recently got his phd from stanford in particle physics, and he went to the same normal, very cheap, good science/eng state school I did. no one is going to care at all where he did his undergrad, they are however going to look at where he did his phd.
