The North Dakota story is especially interesting... there's some guy who's by far their biggest benefactor and it is all conditioned on the mascot always being the Fighting Sioux. If it ever goes away for any reason, UND has to refund the money, IIRC.

Their hockey arena has Fighting Sioux emblems virtually everywhere in the arena. They are embedded in the facility to the point where you would just about need to tear it down to remove them all.
