All that really matters is whether they believe in imposing their beliefs on others.

Even if you cast aside Religious belief it is still a fact that in some sense all politicians and office holders impose their other beliefs or value systems on others, overtly or covertly. It is unavoidable.

Just ask Tony Blair.

Why ask TB? he never failed in an attempt not to impose his beliefs.

but the fact that to some extent you will fail if you do try doesn't mean you don't want someone who believes its inherently the wrong thing to do.

Its why AC is attractive but its a fine ideal in a normal democracy as well. Essential ideal imo.

Basically, the powers of a President to enrich himself pale next to his powers to create worldwide havoc.

[/ QUOTE ]

You state this as if worldwide havoc is a bad thing.

And you are wrong in the general sense; only certain presidents or prime ministers etc are capable of creating "worldwide havoc". The president of Albania or Paraguay for example must set the standard goal of lining their pockets, padding their stock options and bank accounts, and hoarding gold instead of setting off catastrophes that rock the foundations of civilization that may bring the demise of all of humanity. Though I think the latter part of my last statement is a worthy goal.

Dumber presidents can appear better than smarter presidents because:

1. They have better advisors.

2. They were lucky enough to have events around them give them opportunities to look good.

3. They were lucky enough to not have to deal with situations where their lack of great intelligence would not come to the forefront.

4. They had other talents that made up for it.

i dare suggest an additional factpr about dumber leaders:

5. THEY GENERALLY LOOK THE PART

"blink"

sure it is.
I do not think one president ever left religion out of making polices.
Separation of church and state are myth.
Even astrology was` used in making key decisions.
