Jefferson was responding to a legitimate threat though where American merchant ships were being attacked and stolen from. That's radically different than the current camp that thinks we need to occupy the entire Middle East and remake it in our image. While Jefferson may have looked hawkish in his day, I really doubt that he'd support the military industrial complex that our current regime is engaging in. Ron Paul is closer to Jefferson than any presidential candidate the Republicans or Democrats have trotted out in the last 50 years.

I listened to Ron Paul on Bill Maher, instantly liked him and thought too bad he has no chance.

1a) Michael Bloomberg. Obviously isn't running, an Independent in the White House would be awesome.
1b) Bill Richardson. Anyone interested should read his interview in Playboy, this guy seems good to me.
2) Barack Obama. I like what he represents (change and hope) but doubt he could change anything.
3) Guiliani. I like his personality in interviews, wish he wasn't such a parrot about terrorism. (9/11, 9/11, 9/11)

Personally all the "big issues" don't mean much to me. I just want someone who will actually tell the truth (yeah, I know I'm asking too much here) and put aside political allegiance to do the right thing. ONE TIME!

If he doesn't have a chance, it's only because people who would vote for him think he has no chance and throw away their vote somewhere else. Self-fulfilling prophecies FTW.
