I was talking about this with a friend and we agreed that the ending that was released was better, in part due to the fact that anything that makes you feel sympathetic towards Cartman kind of takes away from his role in the show.

Meh, I don't feel any sympathy for Cartman.

I dont think it was meant as sympathy for Cartman as much as it was Butters finally "winning" one. He's usually the one getting dumped on and he turned around on Eric.
