From what I can gather from this thread, I think this sums up the KU-Mizzou rivalry nicely:

Thanks for that!

I hate posting a MU win, but this basketball brawl is carry-over from the '60 football season. I like, especially, the band playing our National Anthem to restore order and calm the crowd.

1961 KU, MU Brawl

Also, unconfirmed, but Jack Buck on play-by-play?

I realize this is a thread about football, but all this Mizzou-hating reminded me of 2 of my favorite photos of all time. Missouri played in the Hearnes center for 32 years and won 85% of their games there. Here's a couple shots from the final game before they closed down the building.

And, don't even get me started on their cokehead former coach, Quinn Snyder. Or how they named their basketball arena after a 20-something girl who never attended their university or did anything of note (besides cheat through college leading Missouri to rename the arena).

[/ QUOTE ]

Speaking of cheating:

For being found guilty of academic fraud and other violations, football loses three scholarships per signing class for each of the next two years. The 25-scholarship maximum for most football programs is just 22 for Kansas until 2009.

KU athletics: providing answers to correspondence course tests since 2001.

[/ QUOTE ]

Holy crap, are you kidding me??

Remind everyone why your arena was renamed... go ahead.

[/ QUOTE ]

No I'm not. We at least didn't have academic FRAUD happening ON OUR CAMPUS. We were given a $25 MILLION dollar donation to build our STATE OF THE ART basketball arena. Part of that donation included naming rights to the arena. After Paige's cheating came out, her parents were mortified and gave up the naming rights so the school could rename the arena. Explain to me where Missouri did anything wrong there? Enjoy playing in your high school gym.

Oh, and remember when Ricky Clemons took 24 credit hours in summer school. The guy that choked his girlfriend because she wouldn't watch Roots. The guy who violated the terms of his work release to go to a party at the University President's house at which he crashed an ATV and ended up in the hospital. Did Mizzou really think there was any chance that guy taking 24 credits would go unnoticed?

[/ QUOTE ]

Well I can't say anything in defense of Clemons or Quin. Obviously both were mistakes. However, the NCAA cleared Clemons' hours. Would you REALLY like to compare the violations/off court actions of basketball players between our schools for the last 5 years? You do remember a certain player by the name of JR Giddens right? You do remember getting put on probation for PAYING your players right?

[ QUOTE ]
Quin Snyder and Ricky Clemons created more scandal in 3 years than KU has in their entire history.

KU Athletics: 6 major NCAA violations.

MU Athletics: 4 major NCAA violations.

although mizzou did get the best of illinois this year in what turned out to be a huge win

Micro, I guess I just don't understand where you're coming from. At the end of my post I explained why Kansas counts the win (results on the field) and why Missouri counts the win (5/8 ruling of the conference). I'm not bitter at all, and I actually think both claims have some degree of validity though I don't think I'm supposed to admit that.

Sandy, awesome post. Thanks.

fifield, I forgot about that video. I know it was a different time, but the national anthem? Did they really think that would work?

MicroBob 11-17-2007 01:47 PM

Re: Why I Hate Missouri -- You Should Too

National anthems have been tried to end really bad fights or fan brawls in other games I think. I don't think it was invented in this game but I could be wrong.
Another technique that has been tried is to turn out the lights.

I can't be positive but I'm pretty sure that is not Jack Buck doing the announcing.

It could be a young version of him, before he completely fell in love with his own voice.

http://www.stlradio.com/hof-legacy-1.htm

Jack Buck
For several generations of baseball fans, Jack Buck’s voice has been permanently linked to the St. Louis Cardinals. He came to St. Louis to be a play-by-play announcer for the team in 1954.
With the exception of a couple years, Buck has continued in the booth for the Redbirds, but he held many more jobs. At KMOX, listeners heard him doing play-by-play for St. Louis Cardinals football, University of Missouri basketball and football, and, for a short time, St. Louis Blues hockey.
He also did Monday Night Football for CBS Radio and broadcast numerous Superbowls and World Series games. For several years in succession, he logged over 200,000 air miles annually. He is a member of the broadcast wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame and was given the Pete Rozell Award by the National Football League.
Jack Buck also established himself as a strong team member at KMOX. He was a disc jockey in the late 50s, and was the host of the first “At Your Service” program February 29, 1960. He hosted Christmas morning programs from his home every year, and, in the ultimate indication of community involvement, was known to host up to 250 civic and charitable events a year.

Re: Why I Hate Missouri -- You Should Too

there's a real vague similarity with his voice but I just don't think it's him.

Jack's brother Bob Buck sounds like almost a carbon-copy of him and bounced around about a zillion different gigs in his career. He set things up for a cop to fake-arrest me in the middle of a broadcast I was doing once and totally freaked me out but that's a different story.
I don't think this announcer is Bob Buck either.

I've heard early recordings of older announcers before including Vin Scully, Ernie Harwell, Mel Allen, Bob Murphy, Red Barber etc and more often than not you could still tell it was them even though they sounded a bit different and obviously much younger.

However early recordings of Harry Caray do sound significantly different and if you only heard him when he was older it's difficult to tell that it is him on stuff like Bob Gibson's 18 K's in the 68 World Series for example.

I'm not saying that announcer in the basketball brawl is 100% not Jack Buck. It's possible I guess. But I just don't think it is him doing that game.

Yeah I dont get it all. Your favorite photos of all time are fans after their team lost? You can find something similar in every arena if the home team loses.

I hope Missouri and Kansas both lose the rest of their games when they aren't playing each other, and after this year begin another 40 years of sucking. I want Oklahoma to beat whichever team it is in the championship game by 50. Thanks for inspiring interest in the big 12.

This thread needs some general Missouri vs. Kansas heads-up action.

Missouri has Brad Pitt. Kansas has Don Johnson. Point - Missouri.

In Missouri it's still illegal to have oral sex. But it's one of the few states where sex with animals is completely legal. Zoophiles actually flock to Missouri. Point - Kansas (unless you're into that sort of thing).

Missouri has St. Louis. Point - Kansas.

Missouri has Branson, Kansas has a giant empty void over 2/3 of it's state. Push.

Kansas has Fred Phelps. 5 Points - Missouri.

When people think of Kansas, they think of Dorothy and Toto. When people think f Missouri they think of... ummm... little help here?

I’ll chime in here with my KU-MU perspective as, like suzzer, a Kansas City ex-pat, and a Kansas alum whose family have been Jayhawks since a long-ago grand-relative drove herself alone in a buckboard through Indian territory on the Oregon Trail to attend university on the Hill in Lawrence.

The football rivalry is thought to be the longest uninterrupted matchup in organized American collegiate sports, west of the Mississippi -- since 1891.

The cultural rivalry is deep and ancient and rooted in brutal Free State/Slave State politics. The philosophical issues were more complex than simply pro- and anti-slavery positions; it was a broad debate on western expansion and visions of our emerging national identity. Civil War histories tend to overlook the Border Wars, but the Kansas-Missouri line is where the national debate came to life. And death.

Memories still linger. As history goes, it wasn’t all that long ago. Harry Truman’s mother, for example, is often cited as a profound influence on her son -- and she lived through those times as a Missouri-border farm girl. And she was a passionate, shrill, life-long Jayhawk hater.

As a schoolboy, my father offered to contribute to my university education at any institution that might accept me. Save one. Missouri.

As a schoolboy in Kansas City, the hallways held a special tension the week of the KU-MU game, especially at my school, located smack on State Line Road, the opposing state just across the street, the student body pretty evenly divided. Friends were not-quite-friends that week.

Only to a somewhat lesser degree than Michigan/Ohio State coaches, and Army/Navy coaches, Kansas/Missouri football coaches were always in jeopardy if they could not compete in the essential end-of-the-season affair.

The rivalry hit its zenith in 1960, when Kansas, led by John Hadl, Curtis McClinton and Bert Coan, defeated the favored Tigers, who were rated number one in the country, 23-7. But the Jayhawks were denied a trip to the Orange Bowl soon after, and forfeited the win, thanks to a recruiting infraction involving Coan and the owner of an NFL team with ties to Kansas. (Coan was an astoundingly talented prospect. His college and pro career were tragically modest, after a pal of mine broke Coan’s leg in a spring practice scrimmage.)

The series’ competitive fire started to wane after Kansas’ last great Orange Bowl team in 1969 (and the last-second, 12th-man loss to Penn State), featuring John Riggins, Bobby Douglass and John Zook. The football teams have been backing and forthing since, with reduced passion. Most of the energy has been focused on basketball, especially in the years when the delightfully provocative Norm Stewart had the horses to give Kansas a game. In Lawrence, in these more recent years, the student body would be more likely to get aroused by a Kansas State match.

That’s all changed this year, to everyone’s surprise and delight, except for Lawrence shopkeepers who are missing a pay day and Kansas students who can’t get decent seats at Arrowhead in Kansas City (or seats at all), where the game has been moved this year, frankly, to make money for the two athletic departments. But who knew students would want tickets? The KU football facility is the oldest west of the Mississippi and hasn’t been filled in decades (except when Nebraska comes to town).

I’ll try to refrain from (Muck Fizzou) and just say: Rock Chalk! This year’s edition of the great rivalry threatens to be one for the ages. With Oregon’s loss to my other alma mater (Arizona), and wins by KU, MU and Oklahoma this weekend, the prospects are tasty. These things are always more fun when more teams are competitive...

Well, 1906 was 0-0 but today's rules prevent that one from happening again.

But the 4-0 one is still possible.
I like seeing the refs and players put their hands together for that goofy looking signal for safety.

The game itself would probably be somewhat reminiscent of watching my alma mater, Miami (OH), struggle to a 7-0 win last week vs. Akron on national TV with the lone score coming on a defensive fumble recovery for TD.
Except this time the whole country would be watching and going "WTF? This is awful!" whereas for Miami-Akron only a select few across the country were watching to be able to say, "WTF? This is awful!"
