For me freedom is useless without an attempt at equality. I won't hold it to perfection to support it, but it is important to me that the principle is there. Without equality freedom seems to me like nothing more than access to air without access to water.

sigh.

Freedom is letting the chips fall as they may.

In the pursuit of learning, every day somehting is acquired.
In the pursuit of Tao, every day something is dropped.
Less and less is done
Until non-action is achieved.
When nothing is done, nothing is left undone.

The world is ruled by letting things take their course.
It cannot be ruled by interfering

I don't think it is a particularly "conservative" defintion. Liberals certainly campaign on notions of serving a higher purpose, and whether that is a societal goal vs a spiritual or moral goal is irrelevant. Santorum is right on.

[/ QUOTE ]

Meh. Both liberals and conservatives define freedom within the confines of their preferred societal framework. Neither one believes in the most important freedom of all, the freedom to keep every penny you earn.

[/ QUOTE ]

One of my favoroite quotes (paraphrasing from memory)

"the truest freedom is the freedom to earn and to spend a dollar"
Booker T Washington.

Re: Conservative Definition of Freedom

Here are some conservative thoughts about freedom. Conservative unfortunately as it seems many (including those in top positions) do not agree with them today.

"Any who act as if freedom's defenses are to be found in suppression and suspicion and fear confess a doctrine that is alien to America." - President Eisenhower

The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve nor will he ever receive either. - Benjamin Franklin

Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves. - Abraham Lincoln

If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom. - Dwight D. Eisenhower

Define equality.

[/ QUOTE ]

That certainly is the standard answer around here, but the word freedom one can throw around as one wish.

But ok - equality as I used it points to an attempt at treating people the same when upholding principles.

And as I said, to me freedom is useless without equality, so why not stop sighing and take up reading posts instead.

Rudy G:

Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.

George Washington:

[ QUOTE ]
Respect for [the government's] authority, compliance with its laws, acquiescence in its measures, are duties enjoined by the fundamental maxims of true liberty. The basis of our political systems is the right of the people to make and to alter their constitutions of government. But the constitution which at any time exists till changed by an explicit and authentic act of the whole people is sacredly obligatory upon all. The very idea of the power and the right of the people to establish government presupposes the duty of every individual to obey the established government
