i think delahunt just didnt decide to be loyal to costigan as he was dying. maybe he knew he was a rat but he was a better friend to him so he didnt turn him in on his death bed for no better reason than loyalty to the crimeboss thats been running him with no <3 for years.

if wahlberg was a rat, the guy with all the knowledge of the undercovers, then there would have been no point of the infiltration they would have the info already.

I just re-watched the movie. I've always been in the "Delahunt wasn't a cop" camp, figuring it was misinformation to take the heat off Will and his not saying anything was because of the fact that he knew he was dying and was connected to what Will had said earlier re: Costigan not paying much and his guys (except for French) not being loyal to death.

On this viewing though I caught something different.
Chap 25 on the DVD: Sullivan is looking through the "Citizens" information, we see him punch in a few #s, but only two do they show us the result, Delahunt and Costigen, and both are "Person Not Found". Also, this scene is edited with the scene where Delahunt is talking about how he knows how to spot cops.

So I think this viewing has changed my mind, I think he might have been a cop.

1) What is in the small black box that Costello gives Sullivan right after the Academy graduation while they're sitting in the car?

I haven't seen the film in a while, but I remember thinking it was a cell phone.

The box is like the briefcase in Pulp Fiction.

Matt Damon made him out to be a hero, explained he was undercover.

I assumed it was a check/lots of money, the kind of money that would enable Damon's character to buy such a nice apartment. I can't see Jack saying the line "you earned it" if it was just a cell phone.

What bothered me even more was Damon/Nicholson's last interaction (ie. Jack getting shot). What is the point of Matt Damon's entire life up till this point (Building a father/son relationship with Jack Nicholson and risking the dirty cop life) if he is simply going to shoot ol' Jack on the grounds that "maybe" Dad dropped his name to the FBI. The dialogue was anti-climatic and left me wanting something...I don't know what.

Costello tries to kill Sullivan before Sullivan shoots him. So I don't understand the problem with Damon's character killing Jack's, when Costello is the one who made the first move.
