Al,

yeah, dont get me wrong: a phD in anything from an online school is going to be useless (though, to be fair, OP is in a position where he might be able to make it work, given what he has clarified in future posts). Its just that, someone with a phD in a humanity might be able to gain at least somewhat comparable knowledge/ability in their field as someone with a 'real' phD, even if its useless. The necessity of very expensive labwork makes something like that in neuroscience just about impossible.

Oh yeah, I agree with that.

But with the humanities, it's such a prestige whore thing as there's no real empirical basis to determine merit (unlike in the sciences), the larger conversation is set by the top programs and professors in the country. So a dissertation coming out of an online program is likely going to be ignored, even if it is incredibly brilliant.

At least that's my sense of things in the humanities.
