Makes sense. But could a team sign him so he's making some rediculous amount of money like $45 million a year for 3 years and then only $15 million for the last 4 years? Or just give him a $50 million signing bonus now so that in 4 years he is only making $15-20 million a year?

[/ QUOTE ]

Why would they do that? Money in the future is worth less than money now.

Because owners/GM's are stupid sometimes. Look at how Hart outbid the Braves by $100 million to get A-Rod.

What does that have to do with anything?

You suggested teams pay their players more up front so it "costs them less" in their later and worse years.

This makes no sense for the reason I stated.

No one mentioned the most important part of the story. Steinbrenner thinks A-Rod is staying.

[/ QUOTE ]

There's a zero percect chance of that happening. No way does Arod want to deal with all the crap he gets in NY anymore.

Chicago would be a place I'd like to see him.

0 %?

Lay me 20-1 then?

My 50 to win 1000? I'm betting a-rod stays in NY.

I'm just asking if a GM/owner would do such a thing. I never said it was a good idea nor do I think it's a good idea.

I wish Torre would hand in his lineup card, and then leave the stadium. Screw Steinbrenner.

A dollar today is worth more than a dollar tomorrow. Every owner and their staff is familiar with this concept, so I think it would be unlikely we will see front loaded contracts. There are situations where back loaded contracts might make sense if the player would accept them (A-Rods was backloaded a little). In the case of the Diamondbacks, they are paying off a ton of deferred contracts from their world series team. If they could find a superstar to fill a gap on the team this offseason who would take less the first two seasons so they can finish paying off that debt, it would make sense.

A-rod's biggest dissapointment is not winning a world series for the Yankees. I think if he had the chance to stay another 7 years he'd take it in a heartbeat. I don't think he's the guy to back away from a challenge and he'd love to go down as a Yankee great. When he finally breaks out of this slump he'll be a total here. Did you see the applause for his first hit today?

This guy's a broken-down wreck physically and probably eats Viagra by the bottle just to keep his pretty wife happy. Time for Steinbrenner to mercifully relieve Torre of duty...

there are a few situations where this COULD make sense, i s'pose.

for instance, say for some reason teh team who signs him signs him to a deal like this, and in 5 years or so when arod begins to decline and for some reason the team is out of contention can sell arod without having to eat a gigantic amount of money to help pay the salary.

This is insane.

If Arod stays in New York, he gets more money and the Yankees get a discount. The only way he leaves is if Boras or Cashman do something incredibly stupid, or refuse to negotiate out of spite or some [censored].
