Re: WOW WOW OMG WTF BBQ new Coen brothers movie trailer

Saw it last night. It exceeded my high expectations. I am a huge Cormac McCarthy fan so I'm not sure how non fans will react to the movie. This is one case where the movie might actually be better than the book. The Coen brothers did a fantastic job of bringing this book to the big screen.

SPOILER ALERT !!!!!!!!

<font color="white"> The one nit that non-fans of McCarthy's books might not understand is why Llewelyn went back to the crime scene to bring the drug runner a jug of water. The thing about McCarthy's characters is that they follow a very strict moral code. So for example, if you say you are going to do something, you do it no matter what. Or if you come across a near dead man in the desert, you do what you can to help him. So while this part of the movie might not seem congruent, it makes total sense in the context how McCarthy's stories. This adherence to a code of conduct also explains why Chigurh made sure to kill Carla Jean.</font>

Re: WOW WOW OMG WTF BBQ new Coen brothers movie trailer

i saw it on friday and thought it was very good. to be honest, i probably would have enjoyed it better if i wasn't such a big mccarthy fan. i couldn't help but compare the book to the movie, and this detracted from the movie experience. both were very enjoyable. the coens changed a few minor points. for example, <font color="white"> the car crash at the end is slightly different from the book (in the book chigurh throws himself to the passenger side of his vehicle before getting t-boned on the drivers side, in the movie he gets t-boned on the passenger side).</font>

other than small things like that, the only other major changes were things they had to omit because they would have messed up the pacing of the movie (many people will argue that the book has some pacing issues as well which the movie avoids)

and, there is a mild spoilier here, <font color="white"> the movie didn't highlight the parallels between moss and the sheriff's characters as much as the book did. the sheriff's (i'm blanking on his name for some reason, his first name is ed tom i believe) story at the end of the book (which is omitted from the movie) shows how he couldn't do what moss did at the beginning of the movie (bringing the water back for the wounded mexican) which got him into this whole mess to begin with.</font>

edit - to put my semi spoiler in white. sorry guys.

Saw this Friday, very good. I'm sure Anton will be one of the more memorable movie villains.

The theater I was in had some sort of false fire alarm right during one of the most tense scenes. I woulda gone crazy if it was a real evacuation and I wasn't able to finish watching, especially since I'd driven an hour to catch it at the only theater it's playing at in the bay area.

At any rate, I didn't read the book and 'The Road' is the only McCarthy book I've read. This guy writes some depressing stuff (assuming the movie followed the book closely). I liked the ending much better, I thought 'The Road's' ending was way too contrived.

The Road is one of McCarthy's least memorable books. It is fluff compared to his other stuff. Definately check out the border trilogy and Blood Meridian.

Just want to add on to this thread: go see this film. It is extraordinary.

There seems to be a lot of complaining about the ending in reviews and other boards. I loved the ending..

Many critics hated on McCarthy when the book was released, saying he wrote the book for the sole purpose of cashing in on a movie deal. After reading the book, I had to disagree because the ending is so completely non-hollywood.

Ya lots of people at the theater complained about the ending but I thought it fit pretty well. Definitely a formalist film though.

in my mind, it's pretty clear that both The Road and No Country were meant to be adapted. I think McCarthy finally decided to make some cash. Hence the interviews with Oprah and whatnot. (The man was a recluse before this, granting only 3 previous interviews) I don't have a problem with it at all, because you can't make good movies out of his previous books and he writes [censored] awesome stories. I don't mind him writing adaptable books at all. I don't need another Blood Meridian. I can read that 5 times a year and it will never get old.

I saw this on TV with very little volume and it looked like a remake of "The Executioner's Song" with Tommy Lee Jones. I don't know why it reminded me of that but it did. If you havn't seen that movie check it out.

* For SURE best Adapted Screenplay.
* IMO Best Director too.
* Best Sound would be an absolute LOCK if these categories weren't run over by blockbusters (expect Pirates 3 to win that this year even though NCFOM probably has the most artistic sound design I've heard in a movie in 5 years).
* Acting is so great everywhere that who knows where to start; Bardem is likely to get noticed the most because he's such a badass. But IMO Josh Brolin is every bit as good (like a young Nick Nolte) and Tommy Lee Jones as well. All 3 of them could get nominated and I'd be pleased as punch.
* I would say Cinematography but since Deakins also shot Jesse James, I'd rather him get nominated for that one. It even beats NCFOM.
* Outside chance at Best Picture but it's probably too indie/violent for that. The Departed was graphic enough for Best Pic; no chance they honor a bloodbath two years in a row.

just got back from seeing this.

fantastic, absolutely genius movie. the coens' attention to detail is just astounding to me.

i really liked the ending too, to me it was basically a perfect movie. the only thing that grated on me a little bit was harrelson's character being a bit too heavyhanded of a narrator in the dialogue at a few moments, but it didn't really bother me that much.

god is not letting you see it until you admit that the ladykillers sucked balls and tom hanks is a hack.

seriously i just read your review of intolerable cruelty, and all those things that you are ballwashing the movie for are things that they do in every. single. movie. they. make. great timing, attention to detail, repeating tropes and snippets of dialogue... they do all those things in TBL and in RA, and neither of those movies are smarmy romantic comedies.

NCFOM is my favorite of their dramas, I think, right ahead of Blood Simple. I would put NCFOM, RA, and TBL all in a top three that would be 'too close to call.'

Fargo's not in the top tier for you? Obviously, that's up to you, but while Blood Simple, The Big Lebowski, The Hudsucker Proxy, etc., are all great- I don't find many people rating them above Fargo, which is an amazing film.

The ending was great--imo people who think the movie went off the rails in the last 20 minutes at least half missed the point. I'm not sure if spoilers are OK here, so...

POSSIBLE SPOILER

...I'll just say that I wish I had a second crack at the conversation between TLJ and his wife at the end, especially part B of what he said. The general feel of his part B reminded me of the epilogue of Blood Meridian, but I need to hear it again.

POSSIBLE SPOILER

I just want to make clear that I don't think understanding the symbolism of the last conversation will unlock the meaning of the entire movie or anything; I just wanted another crack at it because Cormac McCarthy and the Coens are thoughtful and that scene was there for a reason.

It reminded me of the Blood Meridian epilogue partly because I think the overall feel of the scene is probably more important than trying to decode it detail by detail...I don't know if anyone on earth (CM included) could tell you exactly what the Blood Meridian epilogue "was supposed to mean," but I think the mood of the paragraph was pretty clear.
