I like your treadmill workout. I may start doing that myself.

I just added another 1.9 mile run today with a small cooldown. Starting to like running more than I used to.

Yeah, I like it a lot. The inclines add a lot to the exercise and fiddling with the machine every 3 minutes actually makes the time fly faster. I used to do 2 minute segements, but that was too often. I may switch to 4 or 5 eventually. The whole thing totals about 3000 feet in elevation when it's done.

I used to be very into hiking (I hiked the PCT in 2001), and I miss the kind of shape that I was in back then. The most we ever covered in a day was around 35 miles; doing much over 20 in a day now would probably kill me.

Re: 2+2er Nike Plus group

I did the PCT from Mammoth to Yosemite. 50 miles in 4 days. That was 3 years ago I think. I'm just now getting back into that shape again. I want to go on more long hikes, but I don't have the time off work to do so. When the weather is good, I'm doing day hikes at least twice a month. I can't wait to get a reading on how long those hikes are. I estimate off of maps right now.

I don't have that yet. It just shipped yesterday. I have the cheapest sport armband from Best Buy and velcroed the sensor under my shoelaces and it's great. I'm assuming that since my non-Nike+ ready setup works perfectly fine, the Marware should be fine. Plus, Entity seems to have given it a good review.

Re: 2+2er Nike Plus group

Oh yeah, with those headphones, they'd be long enough to reach your hand with no problem while swinging your arms. I didn't run with it that way, but I put it around my wrist really quick and moved my arms and still had room to go.

Personally, I love it. I use it around my forearm along with some Etymotic earbuds that rock. The only real problem with this setup is that they isolate the sound so well that I really can't hear anything.

Overall I can't imagine a better case than the Marware though. It works great, I've used it in downpours twice (you have to be dedicated to run in the winter in Seattle ), it's comfortable, and it really seems designed to hold up. Definitely a 5-star armband AFAIC.

I am using it right now and it works great. The only minor, MINOR annoyance is that the standard ipod earphone cord can sometimes get a little caught on the Velcro, but this is very, very minor. Great case, thanks again to whoever recommended it.

As stated above, ankle injury still rehabbing, but I'm looking forward to this challenge a lot, just ran 5k on it today.

Re: 2+2er Nike Plus group

DKSr,

My ipod froze today and for some reason wouldn't work until I got home and JoA told me how to unfreeze it...I'm a noob. Anyway, before it froze I calibrated it with a 1/4 jog and walk, hopefully that worked.

I still did my run, not worried about the results being entered. Ran 2 miles for an average of 7:27 (used my watch to time it), not exceptional by any means but a lot different from my treadmill run.

I have the Nike armband and I don't mind the wires, I don't even notice them actually.

DonkeyKongSr 01-08-2007 01:05 AM

Re: 2+2er Nike Plus group

Problem with the Nike armband is you can't see the screen. What a stupid idea for an armband.

tdarko 01-08-2007 01:16 AM

Re: 2+2er Nike Plus group

DKSr,

I f'in hate that.

I have playlists set up and timed for runs. I hit play, slide the pod in the pouch and start but you would think they would have thought of something better.

(OK, you are certainly in much better shape than me to begin with, so hopefully it won't take me too long to get down to 7:30 pace again.)

Oh, and the other depressing thing I forgot to post before when I mentioned the relay thing, is that earlier in the day there was a 15 or 16 year old girl who came out and cruised to an easy 5:34 mile. Ah, youth...

I'd like to join in on this - have a bit with one of my study mates, so will need to run at least a half marathon before the May 1st
Nike screenname Rogvi - will probably be a few weeks before I really get going, haven't calibrated it yet, and pretty busy with my exam ATM.

I think it would be cool to add a fastest mile challenge or something like that, too. That way I can know just how [censored] slow I am and your times can push me to be faster.

All,

The wife and I just picked up The Non-runners Marathon Trainer. May be worth a look for some of you out there who are serious about this; I'm just hoping to enter into a half marathon (and maybe eventually a full). It's a PROVEN 4-month plan for non-runners to train for running a full-length beast. I don't think I'm going to go full into it, but who knows...

Wait, I do to order the Nike + and Marware kit from amazon and see I have to pay $15 extra in shipping as this doesn't count for free shipping? I HATE paying shipping at amazon. Trying to find it somewhere else...

Ahh, the + by itself is $6 shipping and the Marware is like $9 in shipping.

Yuck.

Amazon Prime is awesome. Only paid $5 for Marware case shipping. Nike+ came UPS 2-Day for free99.

That's an awesome CD. Just sucks they only did 6 tracks. That song works great because it's got a great beat and is so long, plus just when it feels like it's over, it goes into the One Step Closer part for another minute+.

I think I may try out Emimem's Lose Yourself next. That should do the trick.

Finally got my Nano and Nike+ kit yesterday in the mail. Aaaannnddd....it promptly snowed about 6 inches last night. Looks like that first run will have to wait a few days.

All,

Despite the fact that I clearly am not the best at running, this challenge seems to be a very good thing for me. It is currently 32 degrees outside with small amounts of ice and snow on the ground, and yet I am going for a run. Without the challenge I'm not sure that I'd be quite this motivated.

5.8 miles at under 8:00/mile?!?! I can only dream. I would have died at least 7 times along the way. Hopefully by the end of this challenge I will work on my running endurance. I can hike 25 miles in one day with a 50 pound backpack, but I can't run more than a mile without stopping.

Just got back from a slow but steady run. Covered ~3 miles according to google ped/mapmyrun but my pedometer only measured 2.75. I'm going to head back to the track to check on its calibration and see if it's just that elevation gain is throwing it off (the first half of my run goes steadily uphill).

Oyah, I forgot. The impracticality is outweighed by the extra 3 calories you burn an hour which is immediately offset by the extra slice of pie they have with dinner.

doing the elliptical backwards is supposed to work your butt more. get that booty looking good girl.

Yeah, I forgot to reply to that earlier, but going backwards on the elliptical has nothing to do with burning more calories. It's about working different muscles.
