In other words, what would be your recommendation for the kid who doesn't yet enjoy reading, who says that all the books in the library suck? [/ QUOTE ] Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Illustrate with many pictures of Hermione as shown on the silver screen |
Re: Touch Children (or, recommend books to kids)
The Phantom Tollbooth - i read it as a (smart) middle schooler, so it might be a little young for some kids. however, an entertaining story about a young protagonist struggling to understand a very strange universe. there is a lot of miscommunication (coming at the theme of communication from the backside, if you will, mr. naked).
Tom Sawyer - more comical/adventure story than _huck finn_, but serves as a nice intro for reading that book later on (i encountered it 3 different times during my highschool and college career). To Kill a Mockingbird - read this for an English class in 9th grade. i'm sure it's pretty standard curriculum for this level, but it hits on a lot of your themes, is very readable, and has a great film version with Gregory Peck. also, the protagonist is a cool, strong girl, which should help draw in female readers. |

wow for some reason all night i thought the title of this thread was tough children, it didn't really make any sense to me, but at least it wasn't as disturbing as a guy calling himself MikeNaked asking for advice on touching children

Watership Down is my favorite book of all time

Re: Touch Children (or, recommend books to kids)
I was actually going to recommend Phantom Tollbooth until I realized this was for high schoolers.
I really liked Black Boy when I read it in high school. |

Talk about getting levelled. |

WE ALL GOT IT, THAT'S WHY HE PUT THE PARENTHETICAL IN THE THREAD TITLE

Re: Touch Children (or, recommend books to kids)
It's kind of a tough read (I guess?) for 9th or 10th grade, but Kafka - The Trial would be my pick
