Because the truth hurts. It may be easier for him to deal with his "double life" inwardly through "guilt" then to live honestly and face possible persecution from the outside world because of how those choices may be viewed by others.

Good point and always possible in this kind of situation. Some "friends" are not what they appear and could do that to set you up to take your girl...
