You need an M4 if semi, possibly an MP5 if you can go full auto. You'll have to have the ability to get your C3 Permit for full auto though.

AK-47's are incredibly inaccurate, however they're also pretty damned reliable. They do suck though.

As far as things to shoot, the best option has to be, although this takes some skill, propane in gas form in a milk jug. Great show.

Other fun things:

Empty liquor bottles
CPU's you're not using anymore
go buy a car for $50-$100 from a junk yard
Cell phones
Sheets of glass
etc.

You've got to use your own creativity.

mp5s= very expensive, and another point: AKs are "innacurate" when you reach about 200-300m. But for home defense, unless the hallway between his door and bedroom is more than 2 football fields then accuracy takes a backseat to overall utility.
