The best way to describe them is "Ancient Japanese Spy." Sometimes TVs/movies show them as if they were super-human, but I don't think they were.

I talked to a bunch of Japanese students when I lived there and they'll flat out tell you that that stuff never happened.

I've also heard this is true too from some very reliable sources. Don't forget there are some sick people in this world so it's very possible that this is true.
