Short Six Month Trip Report

My little Alena turned six months old this past Friday. I don't know what's harder to believe: that I've been a daddy for that along, or that I've been a daddy for ONLY that long. Here's a brief trip report, as I'm sure my experience hasn't been much different than anyone else's.

Birth: Wife went for her regular exam on Thursday, October 26. He said it was time to induce. Nothing wrong, she was just at the point where it was a good idea to get the baby out. We went to hospital that evening and they started the process. No progress well into Friday, so we all decided to yank that baby out. 6:28pm, October 27, Alena made her appearance. I bawled my eyes out the moment I saw her. I thought she'd look like an alien, but she was gorgeous, even when she was still blue.

Three notes about that day:

a) In the bathroom of the birthing room, there were pamphlets about domestic abuse. Good reading for the start of our new family, I'd say.

b) When the doctor opened up my wife, we heard, "She's breach!" For some reason, they had no idea, so chances are the c-section would've happened, anyway.

c) Our very good friends, who were due a couple weeks after us, had their baby at the same hospital earlier that day. We ended up in rooms next door to each other.

When Alena was about a month old, she came down with her first illness, pretty much a common cold. It went away in about a week, but then came back after she had a round of shots. That second bout included a nasty cough. Needless to say, she was miserable.

The pediatrician says she's advanced for her age, but who knows? She was able to hold her head upright earlier than most (although she always hated "tummy time") and apparently her emotions are advanced. Basically, she's a girl who knows what she wants and lets us know it. But seriously, who knows. She still can't roll onto her back from her stomach and can't sit up on her own without a lot of luck.

Started eating solid food a couple weeks ago. She hated rice, so we went to oatmeal, which she loves. She likes to hold the spoon herself, but obviously hasn't mastered those motor skills yet. Thus, we use two spoons. One for her, one for the food.

She hasn't gotten good at sleeping through the night yet. We've finally ditched the swaddle, but she still wakes up a decent amount. Naps are usually good, though. Her night sleep has been particularly spotty this past month. Could be a growth spurt resulting in hunger. She also may be starting to teethe.

And, of course, I get no sleep. I work at home, so I'm with the baby all day. No work gets done. I am actually up right now trying to get stuff done. Hooray for four hours of sleep!

That all said, despite no sleep, headaches, no time for myself, added expenses, and everything else, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love my little girl more than I would have ever thought. I am absolutely amazed at how adorable she is - I never get tired at looking at her. As much as I hate when she wakes up in the morning because that means I have to wake up, it feels great when she gives me the big "HEY DADDY!" smile when I walk into her room.

My little daughter is awesome. This is fun.

Here are a couple pics from her six month birthday (I can't believe I made this girl):

My heart aflutters reading that dlk. I hope I get the honor of feeling that way someday. I'd certainly like it.

LoL at the outfit. I love it. She is a cutie sir. Though from the sounds of it, we've got another stubborn lady on our hands in a few years.

Congrats again.

I got that poker onesie at the 2006 WSOP from one of the booths outside the poker room. Big Kicker Gear was the company. Here's the product page on their website:

I might have a coupon code somewhere. I'll post it if I track it down.

Ok, time to get some work done. I have one hour max while she's napping!
