I'm definitely a soccer noob, so my knowledge is limited. But ever since I heard him call the 2002 World Cup, Tommy Smyth has done the best announcing I've heard from anyone in any sport.

tommy smyth is pretty awful. he seems, in some sense, to lack a basic understanding of the sport. he is quick to place blame (and often misguided), and even quicker to form an absolute opinion, which he will not change despite all sorts of video evidence to the contrary.

seamus malin is light years better.

derek rae, however, is a fine play by play man.

Got back from the Rosenborg - Chelsea game not long ago. Such a depressing game - Drogba was as lethal as ever and Rosenborg were extremely sucky.

However, Schalke and Valencia tied. This means that Rosenborg are guaranteed 3rd place and a spot in the UEFA Cup. We'll make the second round with a tie in the away game against Schalke - a very tough task.

I was actually waiting for the Rosenborg fans to start chanting "Jose Mourinho" after they went 0-3 down in the 1st half. Hearing "Are you Tottenham in disguise?" from the Chelsea supporters was just as quality though!

Since this is the CL thread, it should be pointed out that Chelsea has clinched first in their CL group.

Should also be pointed out that 4th place, 5 points from the top isn't exactly a drastic situation. Last year at this time, both Arsenal and Liverpool were playing for third place. (Man U was in first with 34, Chelsea was second with 31. Arsenal had 25 and 'Pool had 18.)

Smyth reminds me of a drunk in a dive bar. When he finds half an idea he repeats it over and over, louder and louder, until he's shouting. There may be nothing more unpleasant to me that doesn't involve physical injury. And then when he starts on his routine about the imminent sexual consequences of great success ("ORGASMIC! The beds are going to be rocking in ___ tonight!!") --I find it physically revolting.
