Re: Ski\'s quick 2 cents on Thailand

I went to thailand for 5 weeks this summer. I had barely any money, had no clue what I was doing or how to speak thai, and it was AWESOME.

Koh pha ngang (spelling is F'ed up Im sure) is awesome. The islands are SO CHILL and phi phi and all of them are great. I spent like 600 bucks in 5 weeks doing whatever i wanted all day every day

I said in the video that I wouldn't put her on the internet. To me that was the best part lol

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, if you hired her, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't make another one.

To the person who referred to 'Ball in Hand', I've heard this is a good poolroom. I'll definately shoot you a PM close to when I arrive and then look you up. Can anyone recommend me a hotel in that area? Actually, is that a good area to stay for a few days first of all, and if so, can anyone recommend a good hotel?

Thanks.

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

Just reading through this thread, I've got to admit that Thailand sounds pretty cool. I'm 21 right now, have been playing poker for a living and honestly have no responsibilities whatsoever. (No school, no job, no GF, no debt). I'm starting to think I should really go spend a few weeks in Thailand.

Edit: On that "no responsibilities" thing, just remembered I'm still on probation for my DUI. It's not real restrictive, and doesn't say I can't leave the state or anything, but I'm not sure if my PO would be thrilled about a recreational trip to Thailand.

Degen, I'd just like to add that I'm really surprised you told that girl from the first video u wouldn't put it on the internet and u did. Does your word mean anything? Or, am I missing something?

Have any of you had the occasion to use a dentist in Thailand? I need a crown that I was going to get before I left, but now I'm thinking it might be a lot cheaper there. Does anyone have any experience with dentists? How are the prices?

Madd 01-17-2007 02:29 PM

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

The prices for crowns are cheaper than in america or europe. In fact there even is some kind of dental tourism. People who fly to Bangkok just for their teeth and save enough money to afford the flight and more.
I went here: http://www.dentalhospitalbangkok.com...sh/welcome.htm
and can recommend it.

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

Wait, the $1300 I just spent on a crown could have been spent on a trip to Thailand? Now I feel silly.

I have have never had any major procedures done but I had a routine checkup/cleaning and it was great. In Thailand, the dentists do the cleanings while the hygienists assist. The service I received was, at worst, equal to what I get in the US, and I happen to love my American dentist. I paid 400 baht (around $11). In the US I pay $90.

A friend of mine just had two wisdom teeth taken out last week as well as some crown work. I'm hoping he chimes in here, too.

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

It sounds like a lot of you guys are really living the life in Thailand. Sounds like an awesome place. I'm an online poker pro looking to relocate from the US (at least temporarily). Thailand seems like a very good option. I have just a few questions though. I'm sorry if some of these questions have been asked and answered before. I've read all these posts at one time or another, but its hard to remember all the information. It would be nice if someone made a FAQ and put it on the first page of this thread.

What is the deal with visas. If I just wanted to live in one spot for a year, what are my best options to get my visa and how long are they good for. I think someone asked if you could bribe someone for a year long visa, but i never read a response to the question.

I've heard you can get good/decent internet connections there, but i've also read people expressing concern about it being difficult to play online poker there. Can someone who plays online poker over there tell me what, if any, problems you run into playing online poker there. Are you able to play on all the major sites? Stars, Party, FT, UB, Bodog?

Can a non-Thai citizen own property there? Can i buy a house there?

Last question, for now, is how to get money off poker sites into my hands while over there. Can i set up a bank account there? Is it easy?

Thanks all.

Bump.

Degen,

I wouldn't dream of trying to get this thread moved to the travel forum because it's my understanding it is mostly sex stories OOT would enjoy. But if you'd like to do a more serious thread in the Travel Forum about living in Thailand and what it is like and how everything works, we'd love to have it. I certainly am quite interested, but sorting through the jokes in this thread is just too daunting.

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

"Can a non-Thai citizen own property there? Can i buy a house there?"

you can own a condo (i think it has to be like the 5th floor or higher or something silly like that) in a building where farang own less then 50% of the condos.

you cant own a condo in a farang >50% building or land, however there are some legal loopholes around this which probably arent all that safe. however, you can own a house, and lease the land for a very long contract if that makes sense? check www.thaivisa.com

(Asking Deg to create a new thread is ridiculous.)

you can play all sites, but with the latest gov actions you will still have the problems americans have about funding your account. you can play on party from thailand if you change your addy (rental bill and passport visa stamp)

Yo I just spent two nights and 3 days in the hospital with diarrhea.. It was about my 6th case of it since i've been here in 6 months.. I won't go into the details, but it was really bad.

This time was just terrible, and I feared dehydration. So i checked myself in the hospital, and got on an IV hook-up...

had 1 TOTALLY HOT NURSE.......... Paid about 18000 baht for the visit... (It was the antibiotics that were quite expensive.)

You can get a 60 day visa from a foreign embassy and extend that by 30 days in Thailand. You have to leave again to get another one. Popular spots in include:

Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Australia etc.

I look at it like a mandatory vacation every three months. No big deal.

Just got this question via AIM which hasn't been addressed in this thread:

[ QUOTE ]
2+2er: yo was just reading thru a few pms from a while back from people from the forums about thailand is this true: "2) you *will* get travellers sickness and spend ~3 days running at both ends. This is an unavoidable facet of travel to most foreign countries"
degen: heh it is common
degen: but it isnt' gauranteed
degen: if you haven't spent time in asia, your stomach will likely get pissed at you for a couple of days
degen: i usually have diarhea the first week
2+2er: because of the food? or how come
degen: ya, the food, water etc. its not a big deal reallly, part of the charm

[/ QUOTE ]

[/ QUOTE ]

I have heard that you can only stay 90 out of every 120 or 180 days. From your response it seems this is false. You only need to leave briefly to renew the visa, as before?

Just arrived in bangkok, here are my observaions.

Don't drop cigrette butts on the floor near policemen. Instant 2K baht fine.

Dont be taken in by english speaking thais showing you round the sights and then offering you food at a restaurant. Trust me, the bill will be extortionate. Refuse to pay and you will enjoy the company of well built doormen.

Taxis on the meter are cheaper than Tuk Tuks.

Don't bring a full bag. Everything is soooooooooo cheap, you could arrive without a bag and still be just fine.

If you plan to take a night train north to chiang mai, book well in advance as they fill up pretty quickly.

I have not dropped a single butt or match on the ground since I arrived in Thailand including the 4 months I have been in America since returning. I never got caught either, just heard about it.

Anyways, I might be going to work in the middle east and if so I'm going to try to catch a full moon party sometime if it falls on my vacation time. I'll be sure to hit you guys up if I get lucky enough to get a 10 day vacation in Thailand. God I miss it

Do Thai people realize that we don't have this kind of buying power in our home countries? Or do they just think we're rich people who happen to be vacationing it Thailand?

Theoretically, if I wanted to bang 24 hookers in 24 hours for my 24th birthday, how much would it set me back? Assume slightly above average doable hookers, nothing premium.
