I think some people don't understand what an "obscure" player is.

Btw - I think the rule should be it can't come from your home team. I could rattle about 4/5ths of the Royals that played in the 80s. [/ QUOTE ] Ok. Benny Ayala |

Paul Householder.
Ted Power. Tom Hume. [ QUOTE ] Buddy Biancalana [/ QUOTE ] That's a good one. Anyone remember David Letterman having fun with him? Different channels and newspapers in 1985 were doing the countdown to when Pete Rose would break the Cobb hits record. "Only 27 hits to go" etc etc. Letterman chose Biancalana for the calendar on his show, "Only 4,178 hits to go before he has Ty Cobb's record!" Letterman eventually had Biancalana on as a guest and was asking him stuff about the everyday pressure of going after the record, the media hoopla surrounding him and the record, etc. |

[ QUOTE ]
Razor Shines [/ QUOTE ] When I was a kid he was the most popular player on the AAA team in Indianapolis. They were affiliated with the Expos at the time and had completely stacked teams that won the title every year. Over the course of a few seasons they had Larry Walker, Marquis Grissom, Moises Alou, Delino DeShields, and Randy Johnson. Shines was there for years and was always way more popular than the up and coming guys that were zipping past him to the show. |

Mickey Tettleton Brett Butler [/ QUOTE ] WHAT? Neither of these guys were obscure. Butler had 2,375 hits and stole more than 500 bases. Tettleton had 250 homers, played several different positions and was in the top 5 in walks six of the seasons he played, that's the top 5 in the league in walks! He had one of the greatest eyes in the game. They BOTH were all-stars too. |

If any of you are baseball stat geeks like me, check out his stats and see how many odd/unusual things you can find. http://www.baseball-reference.com/h/hornsa01.shtml [/ QUOTE ] Sam Horn hit a foul popupthat landed 2 rows above me at a Royals game. While everyone was floundering around, I just watched the row above me for the ball to come squirting down. Sure enough it appeared. I managed to get my left hand over it a millisecond before two other hands converged on top of mine. I had to yank pretty hard to get it out of there. It sill has a black smudge from that. I thought the dude next to me was going to tackle me for it. All that over a silly regular season foul popup. I can't imagine the ugliness over a record breaker. Also the biggest regret I have is not giving the ball to this little kid who came up to look at it. It just sits in a box somewhere in my house. Big whoop. |
