doesn't it seem to be implied that phil clawed his way back to being DOWN only 465?

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah! But that would mean the computer "team" won by $70.

[/ QUOTE ] perhaps. i guess i read as critically as the updaters write

Re: !#$

they just updated the page saying in fact polaris won by 70. so it should have said phil's final was -465. did it say anywhere how much they started with?

Infinite bankroll I assume

Re: !#$

Both sides have "infinite" bankrolls, so no one can be busted out during this experiment. The only thing that matters is the net number of bets won.

disjunction 07-23-2007 06:59 PM

Re: !#$

Well I know it's not statistically significant, but $70 is 3.5 Big Bets is .7 BB/100, which is about as much of an edge as one can expect. Hopefully the logs will be released so we can find out who played well.

Wow, Phil was stuck the entire match. Looks like Phil played worse of the two as he was generally down more than Ali was up.

Somebody explain this to me...
Laak: -$465
Ali: +$395
Combined: +$70 and it's a draw? wtf?

Fixed your post, Phil was stuck.

The comments read that the machines would have won if the match had ended at 250 hands. I read it as Phil and Ali were both stuck at the beginning but did a better job at adjusting to their opponent, if it kept calling down with King high or something, like some of the updates implied.

We'll see if that's true in a few hours.

Look at what happens if you end this session after 380 hands. There is no amount of hands that you can stop at with near that amount of disparity in the human's favor.

According to the picture captions, the updates were being done by one of the University of Alberta Group, so if his career in card reporting doesn't work out, at least he'll have an advanced degree in Computer Science to fall back on.

I find it funny that a large number of posts mock the fact that its limit poker, and that NL is far more complex.

Since this is the 2+2 forums, I will reiterate that both Mason and David have claimed that Limit poker is a far more complicated game to play. Look it up.

Mason has shown in the past to be pretty lacking NL player (ill let others elaborate) and openly admits to such.

David as far as im aware plays 99% of his poker limit and as such its safe to asume he is no expert and its not even close.

So to say they are the ones who can judge whether limit or no limit is more complex is truly laughable.

This is irrelevant. The question is, for which game is it more difficult to program a computer to play well. If you think that that's limit then you probably don't know much about bots.

OK, finally read all the thread.

Sounds like Phil's half got pretty bloodbathed - the human team losing by $70 is so close its shocking.

Give us another few thousand hands soon please - sounds like the bots can play HU limit cash as well as a pretty high stakes grinder...

Part II is going on now, and 1000 more hands tomorrow. I'm encouraged on the human side that they seemed to have done better on the second half of the match. Hopefully Phil was bluffing too much at first or something, since the theme seems to be that it never folds...

What's a 5% edge mean? Since most decisions are no brainers (find a raise with top pair, fold if you miss the flop), it sounds like a lot.

[/ QUOTE ]

It could be tough to see the game was 52.5% vs. 47.5%, that's a 5% edge, but he must have seen some weak plays and calculated the overall effect of them being that 5%.

If that computer did not adjust (like the one now doesn't) then it's a wonder if he did not have at least a 5% edge until optimal strategy really can't be beaten; e.g. call always or never or anything in-between and the result will be the same, and if one is not playing optimally then one is losing, it just being a matter of how much one is losing, and that's why good players play optimally and can't be beaten as long as they mix it up at least with draws and pairs.

Though when I know a person is not too much out of line it's easy to save money against him, but if it would be an optimal computer seeing that, it couldn't do it - but it still doesn't lose if optimal strategy doesn't lose -- that leads to an another point and that is its inability to win; it just being able to not to lose other than the amount of its "bugs."

Well it says Polaris called a river bet in a smallish pot with Queen high. Queen High! Ellix Powers and Jim McManus would be proud.
