If you've never played poker with a mentally unbalanced person, then you must be new to the game.

And people like that typically don't have much other than pride.

Not that you did anything wrong, but I wouldn't say it was smart either.

Just as in the "dealer wants witty put downs" thread, people here seem to forget that some players do not have the same sense of humor they have. What can be a throw away line for most of us will get you an enemy for life.

I was playing a 4-8 limit game, I check Raised a woman that was 95 and smelled like Cat Pee at the old Trump Riverboat in Gary Indiana a few years back. She told me she wanted to stab me in the face.

YOu mocked him, offended him, and made him an object of ridicule before the other s at your table. From your post I gather this was unsolicited or to put it clearly he did not challenge you first. No one likes to be demeaned. Do it to others and you will find that one guy who will have you, no matter what. He may be psychotic(after the fact) but in the world of feelings you have no defense.

In short you were an a-hole.

Only a child could ask such a question. The paradigm of challenge, laugh, mock is a prime mover in murder. People seek and deserve respect. To attack a cliche as OP did is foolish.
Fortunately reasonable men will usually be aware enough to laugh it off but we are all not reasonable, are we?

Don't be scared of him, let him hit you and then HIT HIM BACK!!! Whenever someone wants to fight me I say "you go right ahead and throw the first punch so I can take everything you own." Typically, if they value money at all, they realize they are dumb and let it go.

when i came home with a bloody nose for the first time at age 11, my dad told me 3 things that i'll never forget...

at the time, they made no sense, but now, i'll use them when my own son gets into his first fight..

1. if someone hits you, hit them back
2. if you think someone is going to hit you, hit them first
3. never get into a fight

blew my mind at 12 years old, but now, it's makes perfect sense...

i don't back down from sunglasses dude. i'm fairly sure my response to 'listen, you call me out like that again, we're going outside, and you're not coming back' is:

'let's go outside, then'

at that point, it's a freeroll.

i take my chances against most people...if he gets me, i call it a loss. if i get him, which i'm fairly sure of at that point, i remind him that he called me out, and if the cops are involved, i'll tell my story..

win/win.

i've said this once or twice on this board, but i'm looking for those kinds of free chances nowadays...i'm 28, 10 years ago, we'd fight over words. now, i'm worried about hurting someone/jail. if i'm convinced i have a reason, we're throwing...

don't let people intimidate you like that..you'll regret it later..

I have several stories like this actually. All of them involve Indian Casinos overrun with rednecks and Scratch-it junkies.

Not sure why you keep referring to a 300 chip pot.

If anything, it seems like the whole sunglasses thing you did and how you got the whole table to laugh at him that did it. I guess he saw that as something humiliating. And people like that typically don't have much other than pride.

This is pretty close to nailing it on the head for me.

He was steamed to begin with at having been sucked out on.

When you raised him from the button, he thought you were pushing him around. Then you mocked him.

I would go back and apologize to him. Let him know that I thought I was out of line with the sunglasses act and realized later that it had hurt his feelings. Then wait and see if he accepts your apology. If so, you get to continue playing there without feeling afraid. And this type of standing up for yourself will make you feel strong without having to hurt somebody else. If he doesn't accept your apology then it is time to move on, because he would qualify as a psychopath.
