Followup: lots of people have been saying its cheap or lame or douchey, and that's why they want to rule changed. Ok, but given that for the rest of the year we live in a world where this is the rule, do you think there is anything "wrong" with using it, assuming that we believe that doing so confers an advantage? That is, would YOU use this, or would you refrain because it's "wrong"?

Any coach who feels it gives an advantage but doesn't use it for the rest of the year should be fired immediately.

Exactly.

Of course, the thing is, I don't think it confers an advantage, and it's just stupid to watch.

Every coach should use it. That's not being debated. The fact they are allowed to use it is horrible for the game. The crowds are so loud that no one knows that the kick didn't count for at least 5 seconds of massive celebration. Then to make 80k people go through that anxiety again is total b.s.

It's douchey when a coach says to the sideline ref "I want a TO right before the snap". The most the league can do is stop that, but I dunno, TO's should be used at any time.

How do we get rid of this act? Is it possible to get rid of it while keeping the coaches time out?

It will be banned and known as the Shannon rule. The NFL is known as the No Fun League, so any attempt at this kind of gamesmanship will be banned

It is also the league where smoking dope will get you banned for a year while actually cheating will only get you a fine. Go figure

I think they should do away with it. The question is how do you change the rules so it can't be done without other adverse affects.

Simply don't allow the opposition to call timeouts if you are lined up for a fg?

That would be terrible for the defense. What if they recognize a fake while on the field? They have a timeout they should be able to use it.
