So Townsend's $1.8 mil is still the largest pot ever played next to Beal vs. the Corp? (They had some bigger ones right?)

I've never seen any reporting on pot size, but they were playing HU limit with blinds at 50k-100k. You'd need to do some serious 3-betting for a pot to reach $1.8m, even at those limits.

Yeah... This seems very strange to me, but maybe they were just kinda of clapping because there was finally a lot of action, and would have done it if PA took it down too?

This is basically the same thing as casino employees cheering for someone at a poker table. It's just bad.

They were probably clapping because they watched a WSOP final table on TV where the crowd claps after every hand. They probably didn't know any better.
