I own these watches

the rolie

the omega

the jacob

they are all fun and it's nice to have a selection of fairly different watches for different occasions/moods/etc

i definitely wear the rolie the most as it's really nice, that picture doesn't do it justice.

a side note does anyone know anything about watch maintenance/cleaning?

This is the same watch I think, only in gold. Could I have read the price correctly, $13,000? Is that possible? I've never heard of anyone paying that kind of money for a watch!

IWC actually does sell several watches in OP's price range, including several in the Portofino line that are less than $3k:

Re: Watches

cts, is the Rolex an Oyster Perpetual Datejust? I'm straining my eyes but can't make out what it says.

From what I know about watch maintance, you are looking at getting the water resistance of the seals checked every year or so and a servicing every 4-5 years.

Re: Watches

A few of you have wondered why someone would want to buy a machanical watch when a quartz is more accurate, requires less maintaince and is a fraction of the price.

I can only speak for myself but, in general, I'm interested in low-technology crafts, ie. masonry or carpentry. More accurately I'm interested in the finished product (having spent about 6 months spilting and cutting stone I have no intention of practicing masonry even as a hobby). The craftmanship and tradition involved in many low-tech trades are very appealing to me.

A machanical watch take a great deal of skill and precision to make and maintain. I love the idea that a talanted horologer has used his skill and expertise to create, what is to me, a complex and very beautiful machine.

I hate every one of these watches, and I'm a watch lover...no offense, just not my taste...

I like the other two, but the Jacob is the ugliest thing ever created by man.

I have no problem with this at all.
You appreciate a fine watch as a work of art, and are willing to pay for that artistry.
To me, that's quite different that someone buying an expensive watch just because it's expensive and they want to look balla.
