I understand what you are getting at but I don't think it matters... in general.

Now if you know the #3 team really really needs a new MLB and on your team's draftboard the two players are equal, there could be some value in trying to trade down a spot, which occasionally happens.

Otherwise though, I don't see how their "ranking" within the draft class really matters. In this situation I would mostly be thinking about a combination of these two factors:

1. Positional value based on my defensive scheme and strengths at other defensive positions (IE if I play a ton of man coverage and have great corners, safety could be slightly less important, or if my DTs are super good, run defense at MLB is less important etc.)
2. Value over replacement analysis (using the actual replacement if I don't draft him, not a theoretical replacement.)

Because you ask if an argument can be made, then eliminate the legitimate argument so as to make the hypothetical stupid. There's no point asking hypothetical questions if you ask them in such a way as to make the answers stupid.

Then you flip a coin, because there's no reason to take a player just because he's the top prospect at his position.

Jack, what if you pick 5th and the first 5 prospects are MLBs, and the 6th is a tie between MLB and SS? Is there an argument for taking one over the other, or just flip?

you take whichever player is going to lead to improving your team the most, it doesn't matter if it is the #1 punter or the #34 DE
