The is a classic line designed to extract the most when ahead but lose the least when behind. A pocket pair probably checks through the river since we probably don't call with less than an A, but he'll often feel obliged to call a river donk given the pot odds we're offering him.

Can get interesting from a metagame perspective when both parties are familiar with the play.
