Re: Instructions on setting up a Proxy Server

I'm confused as to what everybody is asking. The OP was instructions for setting up the proxy.

I believe there will be problems using a proxy for some sites, namely party since they use additional ports besides what is being proxied.

Running through a dedicated virtual server via VPN would be the best way to ensure your traffic appears to originate from another location. That process is:

1. Buy a dedicated, virtual server from a company offering such a service.
2. VPN to it.
3. Use the virtual machine's gateway as your gateway.

Done. All your traffic will be going through the virtual server.

Can you dumb this down to a oh lets say a second grade level?

VPN? How would I use that other "virtual machine" as a gateway or is that what's in the OP post?

Not sure how to explain it simply with specifics. There are many methods of establishing a VPN and it will depend on what operating system is running on the virtual server and what VPN client you will be using.

Chances are wherever you buy/host your virtual server can set you up with on that has a VPN server enabled, and they'd likely have a "howto page" for downloading a VPN client. Just tell them you want a dedicated virtual server with a VPN server, and they'll be able to go over your options.

Price wise can you give a ball park figure?

Also maybe this will work.

I go to canada and get wireless broandband internet for my laptop, and come back to the states.

In party's eyes it will look like im playing in Canada correct?

Thank you so much

That won't work unless you're right accross the border and are hitting a canadian access point. If you were referring to wireless data service through cellular networks, that'd also not work.

I am researching solutions and options to make things easy for the non-compugeek types. If anyone wants to help out or is willing to try things we come up with, please PM me and we'll go from there.

This topic (in this thread and others as well as in private conversations) has changed directions many times so I'd rather take it "underground" instead of creating a technical thread that hits 20 pages and becomes insanely difficult to follow...not to mention I basically hijacked Bish's thread.

Re: Instructions on setting up a Proxy Server

Its just not trivial, Bishop did about the best you can do with his original post.

You cant just list out a simple instructions.
It depends on if you own the proxy, if you are using a public proxy (bad idea) if you are using VPN or SSH etc.
