This happened in some small town named "Cornwall" which is in Ontario (about 4 hours or so from Toronto i believe). What on earth makes a kid think that this is okay? This just seems too ridiculous to even be true....

This is surprising to you? I am sure that there are hundreds of kids suspended on Halloween around America.

If I later saw someone dressed up as whoever burned anything in my yard I'd have to be an idiot to equate the two incidents and be at all disturbed by it.

[/ QUOTE ]

no one is accusing the kids of being in the kkk.

no, i think i get what he's saying i just disagree (obv)

correct me if i'm wrong: he's saying there is no link b/t these kids wearing a kkk costume and the actual actions of the kkk and as such there's no reason to be offended.

also, i don't think there's any reason to assume the intention was to make fun of the kkk. did they say that it was?

Close. I just don't think that offensive behavior should ever be stopped when the only reason to stop it is because it's offensive.

Like, you can't yell fire in a crowded theater because you can actually harm people because of the ensuing chaos. You don't walk around naked in an elementary school because you could screw up little kid's minds. There is always another reason beyond the "that's offensive" concept.

In this case, they're effectively preventing them from doing something that does absolutely no harm beyond making someone think that they're acting in poor taste. The next step would be to ban other costumes because they're too scary, which is kind of the whole point of halloween. Really scaring someone is worse for their psyche than offending their sensibilities.

Tshilombo, a black Grade 12 student, was shocked to see at least three of her peers, all of First Nations descent, dressed up like members of the KKK Wednesday.

[/ QUOTE ]

What does it mean to be 'of First Nations descent'. Is that the PC way to call somebody white in Canada?

[/ QUOTE ]

It's the PC way to call someone a native american or American indian or whatever the technical PC name is today.
