Did anyone here about the news of the NYC shooting where there was a HOME POKER GAME?! ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS I TOLD YOU SO!!!! AND THAT IS MY EXACT POINT AS TO WHY THESE TYPES OF THINGS CAN NOT BE TRUSTED!

When I heard this story, I felt sorry for this man, but at the same time, I felt so vindicated because this is the exact type of thing that I was talking about as far as security is concerned.

You're an idiot. That wasn't a home game, it was an underground club. Private home games with a hundred or two dollars is very different from a place that had up to $250 000 on hand.

The robbers got away with a few thousand - I find it hard to believe it was such a high stakes game if the robbers could only manage to steal a few thousand.

Look, I don't know if its true or not but there's still a HUGE difference between a home game and an underground club.

lol @ underground club and home poker game being the same thing.

Seriously dude, play online. It's perfect for you. Also, order your groceries online and have them delivered (don't open the door, have a special trap door for them, because the delivery guy might want to hurt you). If you HAVE to drive, get a hummer with bulletproof windows. Better yet, don't have any windows, put a camera on it and drive using that.

You know what, just become the bubble boy already.

I was there. It wasn't a home game, it was an underground club. It is highly unlikely that they only took a few thousand. If they did, it would only because mgmt did a drop before they arrived and players had all of their money in play (i.e. the amount of cash in their wallets was minimal). For the record, I've played in home games/underground clubs extensively in NYC for over three years and this was the first time I was robbed.

Agree with the above. I have also played/dealt/floor managed the poker club scene in NY and NJ for the better part of 3 years, and I've never been there during the occurence of something like this. Granted, this occurence is frightening, but, the relatively low rate of these things occuring is what shouldn't dissuade you from going.

All this being the case, my question to you is, what type of game are you possibly envisioning? You want to play live, but not at a game that can be robbed. No such thing exists. Nowhere but a casino offers absolute safety, along with all of your other accomodations.

I guess I am being unrealistic - I'd like to play in a 1/2 NL, 2/5 NL cash game setting. Just don't wanna get cheated or robbed pretty much. If I could go with someone else I knew, I wouldn't have the same apprehension as opposed to me just going by myself like I said. Maybe - someone could PM some info about games where theres a decent amount of people (10-20) that has been around for a decent amount of time and has had no incidents.

I don't know how thuggish the people you play with are, but I don't worry about that with the people I know from the poker scene. Also, I don't know how it works in Jersey, but in NYC we generally don't invite people we don't know / haven't been vouched for.
