Re: Lakers and Bulls discussing Kobe trade daily

taking Chris Ford's draft analysis as gospel should be, though.

Not to mention the team operated with an obvious lack of depth for way too long.

I'm not trying to say he's a crappy GM.. just saying #2 could be a little ambitious.

I'm curious as to who you would put #2

Colangelo? Paxson? Isiah

Probably too soon now, but Pritchard will probably be in the debate soon. Sam Presti too. Colangelo is also very good.

It's just hard to rate because so much depends on how some ping pong balls fall. I mean, take a look at Paxson. He's largely benefited from the draft and owning Isiah (cuz that takes talent). I mean, he's good. Definitely. He evaluated the talent and made smart picks, and knew the easiest way to build anew is through the draft so he went out to collect picks.

However, everyone pretty much agrees overpaying Wallace and shipping out Tyson Chandler didn't make a ton of sense.

I guess my general point is, given the luck of the draft and the relatively low salary cap that restricts trading a good deal, it's not too easy to analyze GMs. There are basically really good ones (Buford, Paxson, Pritchard), crappy ones (Isiah, King, McHale, Baylor), and a bunch in between.

Colangelo > Dumars

I guess I'd go Buford 1, Colangelo 2. I think Colangelo is an amazing GM, but I'm sure some people disagree with that.

God, don't get me started on the whole Chandler and Wallace situation. I mean I seriously would trade Reinsdorf for Cuban in a milisecond. I just don't understand how his mind works. You don't want to pay Chandler, so you give pax the okay to sign Wallace for more?! I just don't understand.

I respect you though colin, because you're at least rational

Paxsons positives

Hinrich pick was sick good. Thank god no collison or sweetney.

Looking at the draft Gordon was the 2nd BPA behind Deng who Pax raped the Suns at 7 for.

The Knicks trade is a lot closer than you guys think, but he got the most out of a terrible situation with Curry.

Duhon was a sexy late pick, Gray is shaping up to be an awesome 2nd round pick.

Thomas/Aldridge annoys me to this day though. Thomas is going to have to be substantially better (I doubt that happens) than Aldridge just because of what he gives to this team. I think Pax screwed the pooch when Aldridge/Brewer draft was right there for the taking.

But overall the only thing he def whiffed on was shipping Chandler out. With Ben Wallace they had the capspace for ONE year, so it was either sign him or lose the capspace.

edit he also got put into a lot of [censored] spots with Jay Williams motocycle accident, Curry's heart condition, and a terrible team to start with

Hinrich pick was excellent.
Gordon pick was fine.
Deng pick was excellent.
Curry trade was phenomenal.
Duhon - whatever - nonfactor.
Gray - whatever - nonfactor.

TThomas - check back in 2 years.
Chandler - colossal error.
BWallace - error.

Overall, Paxson has done quite well. Above average GM.

Don't get the Buford love. Popovich drafted Duncan and iirc Ginobili, not Buford. I guess you can get some credit for not messing up a good thing.

Colangelo has a much better track record for +EV GMing imo.

when Banner 17 goes up the tag team of Ainge/McHale will go down as the greatest of our time.

Dude...it would take a lot more than one banner to get Ainge out of his "Worst GM of the 21st Century" battle with Isiah and McHale.

Oh my. Gray hasn't even played a regular season NBA game yet and he's already a nonfactor. Wow.

Pretty self-evident, really.

Or did you want to start judging the value of picks before they've played a competitive game?
