This might have been said, but my Dad always reminds me that "practice makes perfect" and you can't really argue with that.

I always preferred, "Perfect practice makes perfect."

God knows I've spent a lot of wasted hours hitting golf balls with no plan.

Random observation at local driving ranges proves otherwise.

80% of what you worry about never happens.

[/ QUOTE ]

Except, it's sometimes specifically because you worried about it. One man's useless worry is another's productive concern. (I just made that up.)

YOU SHOULDN'T COMPLAIN ABOUT GETTING OLD. IT IS A PRIVALEDGE DENIED TO MANY.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes. Or as my dad would say when I talk of getting old, he says "It beats the alternative."

Interesting how we both mentioned golf. I was going to say "Perfect practice makes perfect", but I didn't want to sound nitty. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)

I guess you gravitate toward the ones that address your perceived weaknesses.

"A dog has a lot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth."

I still don't do that well enough, but I'd be even worse if I didn't keep that in mind.

1. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

2. Invictus

Out of the night that covers me

Black as the Pit from pole to pole

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the horror of the shade

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find me, unafraid

It matters not how strait the gate

How charged with punishments the scroll

I am the master of my fate

I am the captain of my soul

If you are going to sin, sin boldly.

St. Thomas Aquinas....

Misinterpreted by my girl friend who made me this beautiful plaque...

If you are going to sing, sing boldly.

Probably not the worst way in which she could have misinterpreted it.

Re: Quotes/aphorisms that have actually helped you in life

"panic is not constructive"

this is actually something I came up with myself ("Panik ist nicht konstruktiv"). of course this is not really a new insight - but it helped me on some ocasions in the past. nowadays I have a more relaxed mindset and have not "used" it in years

if I found myself in situations where I was in the process of starting to panic due to stressfull situations (e.g. when beeing late for a job interview due to traffic jams and me taking the wrong way in a foreign city ending up god knows where) then I said that to myself a few times like some kind of mantra. it helped me to refocus on my rational thinking and proplem solving abilities when drifting away to panic mode while facing "difficult" situations.
