Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

Hall's just not that explosive after the catch IMO. He's very sure handed (when he's trying) and finds ways to get open. But after the catch he's nothing special. Watch where Doucet goes in the NFL draft and then see where DJ goes.

EDIT:
Also, in 2006, Doucet way the 3rd receiver on the depth chart with the other 2 guys being 1st round picks. He's good, he just got hurt this year.

pirateboy 11-27-2007 11:12 PM

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

I don't care where either of them gets drafted. In college, Jason White > Eli Manning.

Doucet is a great athlete, but Hall is a great pure receiver and I think you underestimate him, mostly because of anger over back to back 6-6 regular seasons. HELLLLOOOO

So this is basically what I said, you have a good D and running game, no QB or WRs. You think you'll win 10 games in the regular season? You did get beat by MSU and USF @ home last year.

[/ QUOTE ]

We had a very good defense and running game this year. We will have a GREAT defense and running game next year. Our WRs improved this year and will all be returning. It's hard to evaluate them fully because Cox had so little mobility, but they will certainly be better.

Our losses to USF and MSU were without a ton of players (Lester, Davis, Blackmon, Savage, Merrill Johnson, Billings, Ramsey, Pugh, Wilhite.) We had ridiculous attrition at the start of the year. Worse than I've ever seen us have. Obviously the team returning next year is not the team that lost to USF and MSU. Yes, I think we'll be top 10 at the end of next year and a contender IF we find a QB. It's all dependent on that.

I knew Auburn would be down this year, and while I've just started my CAPP analysis, I bet Auburn will be a team I call to be "improved."

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

Lol did you watch the Bama/Auburn game? It was rather obvious he was lollygagging. He is a very good player, just not the best in the SEC IMO. Even at 6-6 we still smoked Tenn, it's all good.

Also- if we lose Muschamp to a HC job, all bets are off. Or if we lose Knox (our WR coach rumored for an OC position elsewhere) I'll do cartwheels. Lots can happen between now and preseason so I'd rather not waste any more time debating it. I just know we're going to be very deep at lots of positions next year with good players.

You're right, it really is way too early to be debating this. Especially QB because there's too much time for guys to get better.

"Hi guys, I like to talk about the SEC but can't remember who the all-time receptions leader is, even though he's still playing and has lead the league for all three years he's been on the field. Go Bama!"

You can joke about Vandy's program - most do - but not even considering a player like Earl Bennett speaks to serious homer blinders. Although this year, I guess the SEC West is just as forgettable as Vandy.

TruFloridaGator 11-28-2007 12:07 PM

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

Only knock on Earl Bennett is he doesn't show up in big game, but this is only what I have heard, haven't looked at the #s. Obviously he has QBs who can't get him the ball in those big games as well.

Lol before Arkansas game AD Mike Hamilton was rumored to have told Phil this game was a must win of he wanted to stay at TN, now we are in the SEC title game and there was an article in the Knoxville paper this week discussing a contract extension and raise!!!

As a UT fan and alumni I am happy to go support my Vols in Atlanta this weekend but would have been just as happy to lose to Ark and send Phil packing. Now we have to wait through a few more years of Phils plan to minimize the talent of a team with top 5 or 10 potential. Players under Phil are best as freshmen as he "dumbs them down" so by their upper class years they have lost a lot of the talent they brought to the picture. Some of Phils stats are:

(not including 2007 season)

Years without SEC title: 8
Years without BCS bowl: 7
Years without top 10 ranking: 5
Years without AP Top 25 ranking: 2000, 2002, 2005, (2006-25th)
Years with 3 or more losses: 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 (6 straight years and 8 out of 9 )
Years with multiple losses to unranked teams: 2003, 2005
Years with loss in last 2 games of season: 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 (EIGHT straight years and counting)
4-8 (.333) vs. Spurrier: (2-3 since 1998 )
3-4 (.429) vs. Richt
1-3 (.250) vs. Tuberville
1-3 (.250) vs. Saban
0-3 (.000) vs. Meyer
10-17 (.370) 1999 - present vs. FL, GA, LSU, AUB (thank God for Zook!)
8-16 (.333 ) 2000 - present vs. FL, GA, LSU, AUB
6-15 (.286) 2000 - present vs. FL, GA, LSU, AUB excluding games vs. Zook
6-13 (.316) 2000 - present vs. FL, GA, AUB
4-12 (.250) 2000 - present vs. FL, GA, AUB excluding games vs. Zook
6-10 (.375) 2000 - present vs. FL, GA
4-9 (.308) 2000 - present vs. FL, GA excluding games vs. Zook
3-5 (.375) 2000 - present vs. GA
8-16 (.333) vs. Top 10 teams 1999 - present
1-6 (.142) vs. Top 10 teams at home 2000 - present
6-14 (.300) vs. Top 10 teams 2000 - present
18-21 (.462) vs. Ranked Teams 1999 - present
2-5 (.285) Bowl games since 1998 (all double digit losses)
2-7 (.222) Postseason record since 1998 including SECCG (all double digit losses)

With this type of performance, hell why not give him a raise? I love Tennessee and my blood runs as orange as ever but the university's love affair with Phil and his decade old acomplishments are getting old!!

Yeah, I just posted about UGA's schedule in the 08 schedule thread.

We could have the loser of the cocktail party not in the SECCG with 1 loss & potentially get a rematch against the other team in the MNC, like a undefeated UGA & 1 loss UF or visa-versa. Would be crazy.

Yeah that UGA schedule is tough but Stafford is a sophomore and 3 of the 4 linemen are freshmen. Lots of young players that will only get better all over that team. Plus Richt is finally displaying some fire he hasnt before, and us Dawg fans love it.

How did LSU do against Kentucky and Arkansas this year? Both costing LSU their #1 ranking. LSU is a good team and I thought they would play for NC but after struggling the last few weeks and allowing over 500 yards to the Ole Miss offensive machine I think we are no worse than even money in the SEC game. I will be there, Sec 121 row 28. Payback for 2001 is coming, I just wish you had been able to hold onto that #1 ranking .

Oh and one more question, when we win and you guys face Michigan in the Outback Bowl which sidelines will Les Miles be on if any??

And those Phil pics are funny as hell, FYI we hate him here in Knoxville too.

Re: 2007 SEC Football Thread

Not really trying to talk smack about our season, just upbeat about our chances in the SEC game. I know we have had some lucky spots and got our azz handed to us on 3 seperate occasions this year. But, nonetheless we are playing for a BCS bid and I am excited about the future here at TN, our defense is young and still effectively shut down Mcfadden, imo the best college player out there right now. Some say Tebow and that argument could be made but my opinion is it is Mcfadden. we just need a coach that is more in tune with the ever changing SEC style of play that is trending more toward stacking offensively than defensively, a complete 180 from a decade ago. Fulmer needs to adapt, if possible, and he will have a team capable oif a NC run in the next 2 years.

The Vols really are a different team in these last 5 games than the one that started the season 1-2. We have won 5 in a row including both the teams that knocked LSU out of #1 ranking and both of our last games ended in overtime. We had an emotional win and LSU an emotional loss. That combined with the Les Miles going to Michigan distractions makes this game much more even money in my mind than the -7.5 pt odds Vegas is laying out right now.

Edit: If LSU wins I will be in Sec 131 Row 28 in an orange oxford, brown hair and beard,6'3" and sorta fat lol. Come by and say hey if you are there, I will gladly shake your hand and congratulate you. I posted section 121 before and I was wrong.

Auburn historically is better. I get that with Satan er Saban around it'll put a dent in recruiting ... but you're still stuck in the SECwest.

If he's looking for someone to back up the moneytruck, should be a few other openings avail that he'd be a front runner for, no?
