this is a lot of psuedophilosophic speech for i'm backing the longshot

the rangers have an excellent team. i wouldn't bet on them falling apart. at least, not until the playoffs.

Hopefully the Leafs fire our stupid GM JFJ rather shortly.

Ducks got beat 4-1 today, no success on the powerplay, and even-strength didn't look good either. But this is only the first game.

It was kind of funny. They seemed to cheer at the most ridiculous times, I don't know if it was for stuff going on in the crowd or something else. Seemed fairly full though.

good luck on that bet.

I think the sabres will be good again this year- but how Vanek and Roy handle being the go to guys remains to be seen. Big questions will be how Drew Stafford does this year ( i think he's gonna be a v. good player) and how Pominvilles production changes w/out Briere.

With all their depth i still think they will be one of the highest scoring teams in the league. I doubt they'll end up higher then the sens, but it will be close.

I wish the Sabres would improve their defensive corps- Tallinder/Lydman are good but they dont have anything close to what the Sens have.

Ducks reciprocate with a 4-1 win of their own! Looked a lot better.

Oh well, here's to the real season starting on Wednesday! (except it's going to have to take a lower priority than mlb playoffs)

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 NHL Season Thread***

I haven't followed hockey for years, so pardon me if this is a silly question. But what's the deal with the hockey schedule? The teams play each other many times consecutively.

For example, the Coyotes have the following stretch of games:

@ SJ
@ SJ
SJ
@LA
LA

Home and home series at least sort of makes sense. But two games in a row on the road against the same team?

Also, why is the schedule so unbalanced? They only play Pittsburgh once and never play Washington, but they play San Jose 8 times.

Triumph36 10-02-2007 12:51 PM

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 NHL Season Thread***

That's some terrible scheduling. The Devils played two games at home consecutively vs. the Flyers last year, which was similarly confusing.

As for the unbalanced schedule, the NHL adopted it after the lockout to enhance local rivalries. They have voted to change it - probably the West complained about not seeing Crosby and Ovechkin enough. I like it the way it is - interconference games are usually terrible.

DonkeyKongSr 10-02-2007 01:24 PM

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 NHL Season Thread***

That's not normal. Teams don't play back to backs that often and when they do it is usually a home & home. 3 in a row isn't usual.

Brian Burke is awesome.

(There's a link in the story to watch the interview. It takes a minute to get to the relevant part).

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID...4&hubname=

[ QUOTE ]
Burke has been critical of some of the moves made by the Oilers this past off-season and did not mince words when talking about Lowe (who made the offer sheet to Dustin Penner).

"...I know one thing. For the colossal stupidity of what the Edmonton Oilers did this past summer, If I had run my team into the sewer like that I wouldn't throw a grenade at the other 29 teams and my own indirectly," said Burke. "So I have no intention of speaking to him anytime soon."

et in the center of the action with NHL CENTER ICE

Did you see over 1,100 NHL games last season?

Our NHL CENTER ICE subscribers did. That's over 40 fast, powerful and aggressive games each week, including some available in high definition! Plus, select games from the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

--

I'd wait until the free trial starts and they release the schedule if HD is important to you (hockey is the best HD sport)

[/ QUOTE ]

I think that Comcast here (Philly) is only broadcasting Center Ice on Digital channels (that's what they did last year) so it doesn't matter how many games are 'available' in HD. Check with your local cable system.

Re: ***Official 2007-2008 NHL Season Thread***

Yup, Ducks have 3 in 4 nights on the road only 3 days after returning from London. It's a messed up schedule. Kings don't play their 3rd game until Saturday. Some reward the Ducks got for winning the Cup. I'd be surprised if they win 2 out of 3.

LOL @ PRONGER.

He crosschecks Holmstrom in the face a couple of times, then Holmstrom gets checked from behind by a duck and tried to check Pronger, but doesn't do anything. Pronger immediately puts his gloves over his face for a few seconds, realizes he won't gets a call, then is fine rushing to an official to complain.

Also, earlier in the game he complained about interference... yet I'd bet that he's the player that interferes the most in the NHL without getting called.

Holmstrom cross-checked Pronger first on that exchange.

Both of them can die in a fire as far as I'm concerned.

During play, Pronger gave Holmstrom two crosschecks. Play is stopped and Holmstrom turns and tries to check Pronger, but it's [censored] by a duck hitting him from behind. Pronger then grasps his nose like it's broken and kinda hunches over. Ref doesn't make a call and Pronger jumps back to life like nothing happened.

I don't want hockey to turn into soccer, pleaaaaase.

Edit: I hate them both as well.

I'll say it again: Holstrom cross-checked Pronger first on the exchange. The puck went around, then Pronger hit Holstrom.

My point was just that I don't give a [censored] if Tomas Holmstrom gets called for a penalty he didn't commit. The guy's a huge diver and scumbag and draws all sorts of penalties he shouldn't.

Sharks are going to OT. Ugh. We hit about 5 posts...

The d-men have been good, what hasn't is the defense of the forwards. We have let a billion 3-on-2's happen because the forwards won't hustle back.

No.

There's really not enough hockey fans on 2p2 to support 'team' threads aside from the leafs and sharks and maybe a few other clubs.
