I love that after a horrendous and flat March, at least for 1 day, this team totally just flipped the switch.

Guys who weren't hitting hit. All was right with the world.

Tommy G awesome as always.

And Porno with the diving double play.

Great way to get it started! Don't move Duke from the 2 hole! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I'm not a Met fan but does anyone else think having Lo Duca in the 2 hole is retarded?

No, I think he is the ideal number 2 hitter in that lineup. Anyone who thinks that LoDuca is bad in that spot could not have watched many Mets games last year.

Not as retarded as batting Molina 5th.

I had wanted to see Wright bat in the 2-hole this year. But really Lo Duca has been excellent in that spot. And yeah, why mess with a good thing? I'd still love to see Wright bat 2nd this season when Duke is getting a day off.

I just think that David Wright, who has a higher OBP, is a much better hitter in that spot.

i can see the argument for wright, but lo duca was very good there last year and i don't think randolph is going to mess with something that works at the moment...though i wouldn't mind seeing the change if lo duca struggles later, just don't see any reason to change it at the moment...

David Wright certainly could do a good job in the 2 spot also. But the problem with that kind of move is that it unbalances the rest of the lineup. And while Wright could probably hit with success anywhere, LoDuca would be much less effective batting in the bottom third of the lineup, which is where he would end up.

I do agree, though, that if LoDuca had an unexpected drop-off, the move would make a lot more sense.

I watched probably 130 games last year(thanks online poker) and Lo Duca was successful - though not as successful as wright obv. He is an aging catcher who is slow and doesn't hit for much power. He will almost certainly shave many points off his OPS this year whereas Wright will almost certainly improve. Lo Duca in the 2 hole isn't as bad as leaving Milledge out of the lineup in favor of Green, though.

I agree with this, where would you put him? I guess in the 8 spot? I don't think you'd see the pitcher lead off many innings if Lo Duca was hitting there but I feel that is a waste.

I don't know that I watched 130 games last year, but with MLB.tv, I probably saw 100, and while LoDuca didn't make a mess of himself last year, everytime he came up with Reyes on, I wished it was DW instead.

I know in the grand scheme of things, lineups don't mean THAT much, but DW was a lot better than PLD last year and that was as a slightly overanxious hitter with no protection behind him. Put Beltran behind him, and pitchers basically have to feed him pitches to hit.

Reyes, DW, Beltran, Delgado, Alou would be an insane top 5. Let PLD hit at the end, where his skill at hitting singles can knock in some runners that are still sitting out there from the top half barrage and clear the pitcher's spot.

No apologies needed. I didn't get a chance to watch the game last night, but from the box score it seems El Duque did the job that we need him to. Offensively too. Ha!

Also nice to see that the Mets infield turned 3 more double-plays.

I can't believe we get to watch Braden Looper actually start tonight.

El Duque looked good, but I think most of the success is the Cards looking so bad. Without Pujols/Rolen hitting, they are in big trouble offensively.

While this is completely true, I wouldn't be surprised if Looper has a halfway decent year. They have a pretty good pitching coach over there in St. Louis...

Just curious, I for some reason only remeber Looper with 2 pitches, does he have 2 more "good" pitches? I'm assuming he does if he is going to start. My memory could be lying to me as well and he had a few to choose from.

Anyway, speaking of pitching coaches, one of the reason's that I was so excited that Pelfrey won the 5th spot was that he will now have a full season with Peterson, hopefully. I'm hoping that Peterson will also have time to work with Humber and Mulvy. Hell, maybe even Oliver Perez can actually become consistent. I'm not putting to much faith in Peterson, right?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he only had a fastball and sinker. But I think that I read that he has recently added a breaking ball and change-up to his repertoire. I could be wrong though and I have no idea how effective those two *new* pitches will be.

I'm hoping the same thing re: Pelfrey. And no, I don't think you are putting too much faith in Peterson. He has done an amazing job over the course of his career. The only pitcher that I can think of that he couldn't fix was Zambrano.

^^ur definitely not putting too much faith into peterson, look what happeend to the big 3 after he left oakland...and while glavine is obviously a master at what he does, i'm sure peterson helped him adjust...he's definitely good at what he does...

I don't think Looper will be a very good starter unless a lot has changed in his approach since he left new york. That said, Dunca, LaRussa and co. must see something in him to start him over anthony reyes and adam wainwright. It should be a fun game to watch!

It's because Looper didn't start and Preston Wilson didn't go 0-3 and 2 fielding mistakes. I'll take a nice sweep here, lol.

Go Go 162-0. John Maine looked very studly tonight. Beltran stepped up and Reyes, though he pissed me off royally with his 1st pitch swinging, had a nice solo shot.

Great start.

i'd say this was a nice start to the season...man, i'm thinking ahead, but it would be nice to wrap up the division early like last year to save the arms for the playoffs...drooling over a rested pedro...

Mets sweep the Cardinals. MLB announces deal with cable companies to carry Extra Innings. Life is good.

I can't tell if the Mets just played that well or the Cardinals just played that bad. I mean the Cardinals just looked terrible. Couldn't pitch, couldn't hit and certainly couldn't field.

The Braves aren't looking too shabby. Should be a really good series this weekend.

Did anyone else just catch that the 3-0 Mets vs the 3-0 Braves is the first time two national league unbeaten teams with at least 3 wins each has faced each other since 1894?!? I know that's sort of a silly stat but it's bizarre.

And what gives with that out call at second... ugh Woodwardaments

Nice opening day win.

The explosion in the 8th was so nice.

Delgado going 3 for 3 allowed me to exhale a bit.

We have a long road ahead of us guys. The Braves could regain the crown.

In their (Atlanta's) minds, we just borrowed the title.
