Re: PSA: One line answers
I think AMA's totally right here. I'd love to post in this forum more, but the propensity of duders to just say "fold" and have that be it is remarkably counterproductive.
If its been covered already, don't post a one word repeat. If the play is ridiculously stupid, don't post or else explain specifically why its stupid so that the op can see the error of his ways. This forum suffers from avalanches of redundant or unenlightening one-word answers. I always make a note to specifically ask for no alternate line suggestions without reasoning because well, I get that a lot and it sucks. I'll be posting more hands in the future. When I post I give all of my reads/thoughts in the hopes of getting back relevant analysis. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's seen an issue. |
Re: PSA: One line answers
Another point to consider for those who aren't too comfortable with that idea is that more elaborate answers might not only be beneficial to the original poster but also to the one who answers.
Whenever I feel like I can contribute to a hand history I try to be as elaborate as possible. If my advice is right, the original poster knows exactly why to play that way in that situation and might not only pick up the correct play but also the mindset behind it and be able to refine his playing style in case situations like the one he asked about might come up again. If my advice is wrong, on the other hand, more experienced posters have an easy time picking up the flaws in my explanation. Again, the original poster can see exactly why my suggested play is suboptimal and so can I. On top of that my answers can take up to 30 minutes to write and I reread them myself multiple times. This seems like overkill, but I think it's actually really beneficial to analyzing your play. Often I don't have the time to thoroughly analyze my own play at the tables, but with a posted hand I'm presented with a specific situation and allowed to take all the time I need to completely take it apart and focus on every single aspect. Of course this is a lot more work then "raise flop, shove turn", but at least for me it's a great way of improving by analyzing situations. Like a session review without being emotionally attached in a "I can't believe that fish called and hit his 2 outer" way. Actually, the longer my posts are the more I feel like it was more help to me than to the original poster. |
Re: PSA: One line answers
Most of the time I think..."tl;dr, uNL poster anyway, won't be anything profound."
Gross generalization I know. |
Re: PSA: One line answers
i like this idea, save for the fact it's at the discretion of a mod. but i like you ama (and your strat), and trust you won't abuse your powers.

Re: PSA: One line answers
my only worry is that possibly this will lead to less posts, even if someone says fold it's atleast adding to the tide so to speak
|
Re: PSA: One line answers
Sometimes I go to look at a thread and see eight nits telling OP to fold a hand that obviously has enough equity to continue ... I don't always have time to go nuts working out combinatorics or equity, but I don't want to let it stand either. Putting a one liner in there at least pushes the thread back up to the top where hopefully someone sane with some time on their hands will see it and correct it before everyone walks away ignorant.
If we do get caught one-lining, do we get a little extra credit for being right? j/k |
Re: PSA: One line answers
nice rule

Re: PSA: One line answers
seriously that was a joke - I cant be bothered getting banned. I'm a victim for this wuth some hands and I'll endevour to improve this in the future.

Re: PSA: One line answers
Standard uNL poster struggles to beat uNL and has leaks. I generally will take more notice of the posters I respect more due to a history of good posts.
Again generalization I know. But you see my point? |
Re: PSA: One line answers
I do, in fact I think I totally understand you on this one. And on top of that it would probably be a torture to dig through 15 three-paragraph-posts that are just as uninspired as the one-liners they tried to avoid.
But if you mention a history of good posts, I'd assume such would consist mainly of more than one-liners. I just think it's easier for uNL to bring up more posters that can be respected, if the less experienced players elaborate their thought process a bit, so the experienced posters can elaborate why that thought process is nonsense. |
Re: PSA: One line answers
nothing gets me more pissed then when i post a hand and have like 3 poeple with less then 200 posts post in the thread first with quick one liners. ERRRRR

Re: PSA: One line answers
Good idea to do this. Why we should do something is more important than what we should actually do, IMO. You can explain why to do something in only a few words sometimes (and the best posters do this well).
A nice side effect of putting in the thought process behind decisions is that the bad advice people complain about will not stick around that much. There may be a fair amount of poor advice posted, but as a group, we're not shy to challenge it. |
