Because now we have more info, he checked behind on the flop perhaps fearing a slowplayed hand from our hero. Also, with only 1 card to come a healthy pot-sized bet will now more likely fold out possible gutshot hands q9,j9 and maybe even qj, also a lot of low pairs and dont forget the total whiff the 98,78 etc which we dont want seeing a river for free either.
