It should be Pit/Cle/Bal/Cin.

If you could just combine Cinci O and Baltimore D and leave the worst team ever assembled, I'd vote that division.

No love for the AFC west? Barring Vinateri's ridiculous collapse, we had a good shot at a 6-8 team winning the division.

AFC South:
SD 13
KC 22
DEN 24
OAK 30

Their worst teams aren't as bad as the worst teams in the NFC West. And their best team isn't as good as the best team in the NFC West. (Avg ranking = 22.25 in AFC West; 23.5 in NFC West).

Adding about the DVOA would make a lot more sense than using rankings.

its hard to say bc people are gonna say tennessee and jax are overrated, but i dont think there's any question that the nfc east is by far the most competitive division in the league

yeah this is what i meant. i assume the AFC south crushes though.

if you just used raw sums how many divisions is the AFC east above solely based on NE pwning all?

Don't you have outlier problems then?

E.g., the average DVOA of NE (70) and SF (-50) is about 10, the same as the average DVOA of JAC (10) and SEA (10), the 9th and 10th best teams in the NFL.

FWIW, here are the conference DVOAs

AFCS 71.6
NFCE 55.9
AFCN 23.1
AFCE 19.9
NFCN 00.5
NFCS -25.1
AFCW -57.4
NFCW -90.9

If you go by ranking:
AFCS 9.75
NFCE 10
AFCN 14
NFCN 15
AFCE 18.5
NFCS 19
AFCW 22.25
NFCW 23.5

Re: settle an argument - which division is the best in football?

IND (53.9) TEN (20.9) JAX (10.4) HOU (-13.6) = 71.6%
DAL (44.0) NYG (6.3) PHI (5.0) WAS (.6) = 55.9%

Although with Indy playing horribly this week, it probably got closer.

This makes perfect sense to me. The best and worst teams combined would logically be about league average.
