It's not so much about protecting against villain drawing out because as you mentionend, we have a pretty nice redraw on the turn.
It's more about being able to dictate the price of the hand:
If we check the turn villain will very often bet the river and most of the time this would be more expensive than betting the turn and checking river behind. Just something I've been thinking about lately in spot like this one.

I know what you mean but what if he CR turn or river blanks and he donkshoves, what do we do then?

c/r on turn would suck, no doubt. On the other hand if we check turn and he bets out river (plus we did not improve), it's a tough decision too...

But you're right, depending on c/r size we might even be forced to fold on the turn...

I bet around $30 on the turn and fold to a c/r. If villain calls that consider that your turn bet just bought you a free showdown. Take it and expect to be shown a hand that probably wouldn't have called a river value bet anyway or a hand that beats you.
