Nice, I also ski. Unfortunately, I am well known im my office as a poker player and that's why I tried to exlude CA and NV along with Atlantic City. It's just not good optics I'm afraid. Minnesota and Phoenix are looking good and if it's in January, Phoenix is clear frontrunner.

Here's the problem with Chicago. The casinos you would want to visit are in Gary/East Chicago, Indiana. From O'Hare, that can be a nightmare drive (with traffic). The closest casino (that has poker) is in Aurora, but it's a small room and no one I know has ever had a good word to say about it. There's also the Potawatomi casino in Milwaukee, which is (roughly) a 90-minute drive north.

Basically, if you pick Chicago, you'll be spending a lot of time in your rental car.

I presume that if it were a summer conference, that Minnesota would move into the lead. Not that it doesn't get stinking hot here.

I assume by "optics" you mean "it wouldn't look good to choose a conference in Vegas if I want my coworkers to think I actually went to the conference"?

If that's the case, nobody's going to think twice about you spending a week in the lovely San Francisco Bay Area. I mean, c'mon now, there's a lot of great stuff that's NOT poker here, and Tahoe is only a few hours away t'boot. I realy doubt anybody is going to think "Oh, he went to San Francisco, must be playing cards!"

They'll think a lot of other stuff, though, if they subscribe to any of the stereotypes generated over the past 150 years. (And they're all true!)

The Bay area isn't so lovely in January because it rains a lot. There aren't a ton of conferences there either. However, the nice thing about a conference in San Jose or Phoenix is he can play locals during the morning and afternoons, when the Vegas cardrooms are desolate, and hop a cheap 1 hour flight to Vegas for nighttime action.

California cardrooms have games that go all the time, everyday (except at the absolute biggest limits). This is ideal for the conference-goer.

Long Beach (LA), San Francisco, and San Jose are extremely common conference sites, so you should get no flack for any of them.

Long Beach is not an unbearable commute from the Commerce (depends on hour of the day), San Jose will be like 5 minutes from Bay 101, and San Francisco isn't far from Lucky Chances and about an hour (most of the time) from Bay 101.

California is the clear winner here.
