Two things:

It was Noon on a Sunday, so I'm guessing the crowd was very much post-church. Once we were inside a woman with a similarly-aged child started talking to me and asked where my daughter is going to preschool. As it happens, she's going to a preschool at a Jewish Community Center in my neighborhood, and the woman's eyes widened a little when she heard that. Frankly, if the guy had handed her a star of David or a Koran I would've been just as annoyed.

This was not a normal-looking nice old guy. I'm guessing former meth addict who was born again - really craggy looking face, goatee. I'm guessing he was 40ish but looked older at first glance.

this totally depends on how old the guy was, if he was 80, fine no big deal, if he is 40, I go a little crazy on him, I really think though that you should have thrown the gift away and made a point to your daughter that "we dont accept gifts from strangers".

I'd be in this guy's face something awful.

I should note that "selling religion" pissed me off more than "greeted my kid". If he gave my 2½-year-old boy a pack of baseball cards, I'd be totally cool with it.
