Re: The Cosmic Question: Interlock vs Overlap

The majority of PGA Tour players use the Overlap,
Tiger and Nicklaus Interlock

If you do interlock, just be careful not to interlock too deeply (with the webs of the fingers getting close to each other) as it will tend to put your right hand grip too far into the palm, vs in the fingers.

If you slice, a 10 finger grip can help you release the club more aggressively, (assuming everything else about the grip is correct) not good for somebody who fights the snap hook.

The hook is most likely not caused by the grip alone, although experimenting with different styles can't hurt.

FWIW, I used an interlock until I got very serious, and switched to an overlap to get the right hand more in the fingers.

I swing with an overlap grip and putt with an interlocking grip. I dont know how that came about, but it did.

Yeah, I interlocked for most of my life and now I 10 finger. Overlap feels wrong. It puts too much tension on my right hands ring finger.

I shoot right and putt left. Damn hockey.

For high handicappers, focus on the correct placement of each individual hand and don't worry about how the hands connect-just do whatever feels best to you.

For lower handicaps, I would recommend experimenting with interlocking if you have excesive hand action and are prone to hooking shots. However, in this area, I would not stray away from what feels natural to you so long as you can correctly place your hands on the club.

Ive been playing golf for ~15 years and have always interlocked, over the past couple seasons I have devolped a worsening snap hook on my 'missed' shots (esp longer clubs) and recently have been toying around with the overlap grip, releaving some of the pressure on the club from my button hand...(mixed emotions so far)...

whats everyone use ? ever switch mid round / mid season / mid career? just for certain shots (ie trying to play a big fade)?

I've used overlap since I was teenager. I always felt the extra finger on the club gave extra control, but didn't want to split the hands (ten-finger).

Interlock since I can remember.

Re: The Cosmic Question: Interlock vs Overlap

I overlap full shots, interlock on approach wedges and wedges and shots around the green (the interlock grip helps me get into a different mindset with my swing for the approach wedges--I think Pelz suggests this in Short Game Bible).

Actually, if I'm hooding my shots with an overactive right hand, I'll move my right index finger on top of the club in a "claw" grip, which takes your top hand out of it, so if you hit a draw with this you know you're releasing properly.

Oh, and I putt crosshanded but with a right-over-left interlocking grip.
