i also use the stiff-arm-induce-a-seizure technique. A friend of mine used to get some pretty good results by turning the controller upside down and putting the button against his knee (he was real skinny and had sharp knees), letting him push on the whole controller with his hand instead of just focusing on the little button.

This is what I would most accurately describe my technique as. Hold the controller steady in one hand, and leave your dominant hand free. Then just act like you are shaking something really fast and in a very small range of motion with your free hand but have your thumb on the button. I think I'm pretty good at these types of minigames, at least none of my friends can beat me.
