From what I can tell, it seems like it's technically not legal to post pictures from any source w/o their permission. That being said, this seems so prevalent online that I have to assume there's no way you'll ever experience any consequences. There are numerous sites that host media that can be legitimately freely used. A good list is given at http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Content_curators

On GeekVillage there's an old thread about a guy who used a comic strip without permission. Author tried suing for $200,000 but only ended up winning $2,000 in the lawsuit. |
