Stigmata, your invocation of Ray Bonnert is entirely apt.

Please visit my thread on bots where I discuss him, amongst other things. Bot Thread

What does stars do if they catch you datamining? (i.e. datamining from the same IP that you play on, not necessarily the same account)

[/ QUOTE ]

It seems like they are turning a blind eye towards it. I'm pretty sure that Stars standard procedure, were they to make an example of someone, would be to close the account, ban the person, but return all funds.

It is easy to detect, a single screenshot of your HUD run towards a hand database is all it takes, but since we have never heard of any such stories, I guess they turn a blind eye?

Arnfinn, I'm confused--would you please explain what that means?

Ok, you have played 200 hands vs a player, and your HUD says you have played 500.

Just to clarify, I think they have a lot more important things to do than that.

Re: Ethics of datamining on stars?

Oh okay thanks arnfinn that makes more sense. Well, another easy way for them to tell if you've been datamining is if you spend a large amount of time observing the max # of tables at once.

One thing they need to understand is that its impossible to do both :
a)allow to observe hands
b)eliminate datamining

[/ QUOTE ]

Can't they allow a different, easily changed SN to be displayed on the tables (not the same SN that you login)? Or would it open another different can of worms?

A few months ago I asked Stars support if a some of the datamining programs/scripts where legal. This is the response I got.

[ QUOTE ]
Management is currently reviewing those particular software packages and
have not made a decision regarding them. If they do become illegal they
will be posted on the website.
