The same as any other type of jewelry/accessory that doesn't tell time.

People start seeing them on rock stars and go with it. It becomes a trend. Some people like it. Some people hate it.

The people who hate it can't really give you a good reason. "Only wear it if you're into porking dudes"? Very interesting and informative.

FYI: I do not wear one or even own one, because I probably couldn't pull it off. But hey, to each their own.
